In particular, he was adept at portraying humans and animals and often sought to bring an element of humour into his pieces.Exhibiting at the Royal Academy between the years of 1862 and 1863, Hunt played into the artistic fashion of the Victorian era and presented romanticised scenes of rural peasant life to what would have been a largely aristocratic audience. As with other artists at the time, such as Erskine Nicol, Hunt ventured further afield than his native countryside and produced several works of an Irish persuasion. As was the wont, the delicate issue of Irish deprivation, brought about by the famine years, was gently ignored and, instead, viewers in England were delighted with rosy cheeked, comical characters, such as the ones depicted in the current lot. Indeed, Hunts figures, though slightly dishevelled, appear to be in a merriment of good health, their ripped and fraying clothes displaying a rustic charm rather than a financial shortfall. In a similar manner, the basic interior nods towards a state of distress: the walls are cracked and flaking, the wood splintered and the thatch beginning to fall. However, despite this, the abode is clean. Hunt has ingeniously balanced along the line that separates mess and disrepair from that of dirt and a lack of hygiene. Indeed, one could only imagine at the odours embalming a house filled with farmyard animals and, yet, the images themselves suggest nothing but the fresh, earthy smell of the countryside.Whilst Hunts improvised versions of Irish life cannot be accredited with the title of history painting, his works beautifully capture and preserve the artistic tastes of the Victorian era. At a time when truth and scientific discovery were at the forefront of society, it is interesting to acknowledge the fantasy present within the work of so many 19th century painters. For the Victorian upper classes, it seems that art was an object behind which one could hide, a tantalising and light-hearted respite from the bombardment of factual revelation.

CHARLES HENRY HUNT (1857-1938) HYDRO - MAJESTIC HOTEL / MEDLOW BATH. Circa 1920. 30x39 1/2 inches, 76x100 1/2 cm. Bloxham & Chambers Ltd., Sydney. Condition B+: repaired tears, minor restored losses and overpainting in margins; minor creases and restoration in margins and image and along vertical folds; light staining in upper image; offsetting in left margin. The Hydro-Majestic Hotel opened in 1904. The modern health resort had its own generator and is said to have had electricity several days before the city of Sydney was first electrified. Its time as a spa was short-lived, however, and it was soon being promoted for its leisure activities and luxurious appointments. Here, tennis, golf, costumed dances, orchestras, picnics, billiards, motoring and swimming are all presented surrounding the hotel in the Blue Mountains and the staggering vista of the Megalong Valley. As a fire destroyed a large portion of the hotel in 1922, it is presumed that this poster predates that event.

Hunt / 19 Hunter St Sydney / £5.5.0' on verso Note: As well as painting landscapes around Sydney (there is a major example of a Sydney Harbour scene in the AGNSW), Hunt exhibited a number of works in the 1880s and 1890s which took Sydney life and work as their themes. He also seems to have specialised in subjects from the theatre, with 'The Rehearsal' and 'A Merchant of Venice' being exhibited in the 1890s. In Sydney, in the late nineteenth century, a French Quarter was located near Hunter Street and it is possible that the bread shop depicted in the painting was located in that area. 26 x 19cm
