      • Don Hunstein, Gelatin Silver Print, ‚Bob Dylan‘, USA, 1960s
        Jun. 06, 2016

Don Hunstein, Gelatin Silver Print, ‚Bob Dylan‘, USA, 1960s

        Est: €1,000 - €1,300

Gelatin silver print USA, early 1960s, printed later Don Hunstein (born 1928)– American photographer Verso numbered with blue pen ’4087/C2 11/61‘ and again ’4087-C2‘ Image size: 28 x 21.5 cm Very good condition The gelatin silver print is a contact sheet on which multiple motives of the young Bob Dylan can be seen. Dylan, who freshly began as a folk singer in the early 60s, was photographed here by Don Hunstein in a recording studio. Equipped with sailors hat and turtleneck, the musician acts with guitar and harmonica in front of the microphone. Particularly characteristic are the two selected images of the photographer, which are edged with colorful chalk. The contact sheet is a unique document of the early career years of the so famous musician. The reprint is in very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The back of the image was numbered with pen by the photographer with ‘4087 / C2 11/61’ and again ‘4087-C2’. The dimensions are 28 x 21.5 cm. Don Hunstein (born 1928) Don Hunstein’s iconic photographs have become symbols of an era. In the history of music photography, Don’s work during his 30 years at Columbia records is unsurpassed in its scope and breadth. Through his subtle humor and quiet nature, he was able to record many great moments in music history. He photographed the famous and the not so famous. Hundreds of album covers and behind the scenes. His photographs documented a rare time when musicians spent time on their art, rather than their publicity. (asi) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Don Hunstein, Silver Print, 'Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo', 1963

        Est: $4,800 - $6,000

Gelatin silver print USA, 1963 Don Hunstein (b. 1928) 'Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo' Signed in ink lower right 'Don Hunstein' Numbered in ink lower left '13/50' From the session photographs for the cover of Bob Dylan's second studio album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan Image dimensions: 27 ¾ x 27 ¾ in. (70.5 x 70.5 cm.) Sheet dimensions: 40 x 30 in. (101.6 x 76.2 cm.) Very good condition Taken on a freezing cold afternoon in February 1963, this portrait of Bob Dylan and his then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo was one of the session photographs taken by Don Hunstein for the cover of Dylan's second album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan." Built of little details, this iconic mage is evocative of the early sixties in New York. The components of the image come together beautifully as Dylan and Suze cling to each other, with Dylan in the center of the composition. The vanishing point disappears into the distance behind them as the street is lined with cars and rooftops, heightening the sense of perspective. Taken in 1963 and printed later, this digital print is signed and numbered thirteen from an edition of fifty. The sheet measures 40 x 30 inches. Excellent, original condition. Don Hunstein (American, b. 1928) Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Don Hunstein attended Washington University before enlisting in the US Air Force after graduating. Stationed in England, Hunstein was able to travel around Europe as he began photographing casually. After transferring to a base outside of London, he joined a local camera club and took evening classes at London's Central School of Art and Design. Returning to the United States, Hunstein worked for three decades at Columbia records, his photographs becoming icons in the history of music photography. Documenting a time when musicians spent time on their art rather than their public image, Hunstein photographed hundreds and album covers and behind the scenes work.
