          Humplik , Josef (Austrian, 1888-1958); b. Vienna AUSTRIA , Österreichischer Luftfahrt-Verband [Austrian Aviation Association], a bronze award medal by J. Humplik, naked figure of Icarus standing left, holding a large wing and regarding a bird flying above, rev . legend in two lines, engraved (Für Verdienst, Bundesminister Dr Josef Resch, mcmxxxvii ), 75mm, 136.43g (Kaiser 1170). Two light stains, otherwise very fine, scarce £50-£70 --- Provenance: bt in Vienna Josef Resch (1880-1939), b. Vienna, was a social politician. He served as Under-Secretary of State in the State Office for Social Welfare in 1918; President of the Vienna Volunteer Rescue Society; President of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1934; and Minister of Social Affairs between 1930 and 19333, and again between 1936 and 1938. H., numbered 4/6, later cast provenance: private collection Vienna ESTIMATE °€ 400 - 800 STARTING PRICE °€ 400 The Austrian sculptor, painter, medalist and graphic artist Josef Humplik attended the ceramic technical school in Znojmo from 1902-1905, then the Vienna School of Applied Arts (1905-1909) with Edmund Hellmer and Arthur Strasser and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (from 1910). He participated in exhibitions of the Vienna Secession and the Hagenbund. He was successively a member of the Hagenbund, the Vienna Secession, the Genossenschaft bildender Künstler (Künstlerhaus) and the Neue Secession. During the First World War he was a soldier and war painter. Afterwards he specialized in portrait busts and created those of Alban Berg, Ferdinand Ebner, Ludwig von Ficker, Jodok Fink, Anton Hanak, Georg Jahoda, Gustav Klimt, Karl Kraus, Arnold Schönberg, Anton Webern and Grete Wiesenthal. Humplik worked for the Vienna Burgtheater and also for the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory. In 1933 he took off the death mask of Adolf Loos. In 1937 Humplik was awarded the title of professor, in 1931 the Austrian State Prize, in 1932 the State Prize Medal, in 1934 the State Honorary Prize. In 1936 he received an Olympic recognition prize in Berlin (XI Olympic Games), in 1950 the prize of the Association of Austrian Industrialists, and in 1952 the Prize of the City of Vienna for Fine Arts. Since 1921 Humplik was married to the poet and artist Hildegard Jone. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographys 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

Symbolism and Viennese Secession or artists like Franz von Stuck are close to this type of design. The bronze has a dark brown patina. The garment and the body that slightly shimmers through are of remarkable quality, also in terms of haptics. With their smooth planeness they stand in contrast to the neatly chiseled headdress. The figure is inscribed with the artist's signature and the foundry's signet on the plinth. The overall height with the marble base is 25.5 cm. It is in excellent condition with only minimal traces of age and wear. Josef Humplik (1888-1958) Josef Humplik was born 1888 in Vienna. He was educated at the Keramische Fachschule from 1902 and joined the School of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1905. From 1919 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. Humplik was a member of the Vienna Secession as well as the Hagenbund and therefor took part in several exhibitions. He also worked for the Augarten Porcelain Manufactory and specialized in portrait busts creating, among others, the death mask of Adolf Loos. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
