"In the 1980s, Ethyl Eichelberger wrote, directed, and starred in thirty-two critically-acclaimed plays which were based on the lives of strong women from history, including Nefertiti, Media, and Clytemnestra, among many others. Performing in drag, Eichelberger also played the accordion, experimented with fire-eating, and incorporated acrobatics into the highly frenetic productions, which were produced in downtown performance spaces such as The Pyramid, Dixon Place, s.n.a.f.u., Limbo Lounge and P.S. 122. In addition to tirelessly presenting his own works, Eichelberger was a member of Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company as an actor and the primary wig designer. After years of progressive deterioration due to an HIV infection, in 1990, at the age of 45, he committed suicide in the Staten Island home of his friend and Ridiculous Theatre compatriot John Brockmeyer."

Provenance: With Alan Klotz Gallery, New York, acquired 2013 Literature: Peter Hujar: A Retrospective, Scalo, 1994, cover and pl. 160 Peter didn't photograph anyone or anything he didn't have deep feelings for. He had such integrity... The depth in Peter's photographs is astounding. They are as calm as he was but so intense. He had a special relationship with light. Many people have tried to imitate it and failed. In his portraits, he doesn't exert the gaze, which is the norm of most photography. He met people where they lived. He is the greatest portraitist of the twentieth century. NAN GOLDIN

Gelatin silver print, 14 5/8 x 14 5/8 inches (374 x 374 mm) on larger sheet, verso signed by Hujar in blue ink. Minor silvering noted towards the edges of the image, the tones of the image with tones slightly towards towards rose, possibly a deliberate effect, though we do not note this in other examples of the image. Framed. Candy Darling, a transsexual Warhol superstar (starring in Flesh, 1968 and Women in Revolt1971) and a prominent member of his circle, died of lymphoma in 1974. Hujar's photograph of her is one of the great icons of the period. Stahel and Visser Peter Hujar: A Retrospective, Scalo, 1994, p. 183 (a copy of which is included in the lot).
