Arthur Foord Hughes (English, 1856 - 1934) He was born in Pimlico, London in 1856, son of artist Arthur Hughes (1832-1915) and his former model and wife Tryphena Foord, who married in 1855. He followed in his father's footsteps as an artist but added the additional name of Foord to differentiate him from his father. In 1891 he was a 34 year old unmarried artist living at in Kensington. He married at Chelsea in 1893, Elizabeth Jones, and in 1901 is listed as a 44 year old painter artist living at 7 Albert Mansions, Albert Bridge Road, Battersea with his 37 year old wife Elizabeth, but by 1911 he had moved to 'The Pines', Pett, and then he moved to High Wickham (Harry Furniss’ old residence).

      Arthur Foord Hughes (British, 1856-1934) Musical Exercise signed lower left "A Foord Hughes" watercolour h:24 w: 15 cm Provenance: Private collection, Lincolnshire. Other Notes: Arthur Hughes displayed an early talent for drawing; in 1846 he entered the School of Design, Somerset House where he studied under Alfred Stevens. In 1847 he enrolled in the Antique Schools at the Royal Academy, winning a silver medal in 1849 for a drawing from the Antique, and in that same year exhibited his first finished painting, Musidora, at the Royal Academy. 1850 was the most important year of his life: he first discovered Pre-Raphaelitism by reading the Germ; he met Tryphena Foord, his future wife and mother of his six children; and met Alexander Munro, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Ford Madox Brown, thenceforward being converted to the Pre-Raphaelite cause.
