WILLIAM JOHN HUGGINS (UK, 1781-1845) "Storm in Plymouth Sound", oil on canvas, unsigned, depicting several ships being driven ashore; the foremost having both masts topped, shredded sails, inverted Swedish Mercantile Marine flag indicating distress. In later gilt gesso matched corner frame with tag giving title and artist's name, captioned "From 1834 Marine Painter to King William IV". OS: 23 1/2" x 29 1/2", SS: 17 1/2" x 23 1/2". Minor frame loss. Huggins" sponsor, King William IV was known as the "Sailor King", for his long service in the Royal Navy. He was, at that time, the oldest to receive the crown at the age of sixty-four. He knew sailing first hand, becoming a Midshipman at the age of 13, taking part in the American Revolution at the Battle of Cape St Vincent; later given command of HMS Andromeda and an ultimately appointed Rear-Admiral of HMS Valiant by his friend Lord Nelson. His standards for marine painting were quite high as a result.

WILLIAM JOHN HUGGINS (BRITISH, 1781-1845) - THE IRISH PADDLE PACKET 'SHANNON' OFF POOLBEG LIGHTHOUSE, DUBLIN BAY WITH THE CITY BEYOND, CIRCA 1835 WILLIAM JOHN HUGGINS (BRITISH, 1781-1845) The Irish paddle packet 'Shannon' off Poolbeg Lighthouse, Dublin Bay with the city beyond, circa 1835 Oil on canvas 24½ x 36¼in. (62.5 x 92cm.) This painting was engraved by Huggins' son-in-law, Edward Duncan (1803-1882) with copies held in the Government Art Collection and at RMG. In 1830 Huggins was appointed Marine Painter to William IV with this text proudly displayed in capitals on the engraving. Although the British & Irish Steam Packet Co. (BISP) dominated sailings in and out of Dublin (to and from Liverpool) for well over a century, the first regular route out of Dublin was, in fact, to London and was the first passenger cross-channel steamer service in the world. Begun by an entrepreneur using the single steamer Thames in 1815, the Dublin & London Steam Packet Co. (DLSP) was formed soon afterwards and, by the late 1820s, was operating three steamers, one of which was Shannon. Built at Limehouse on the Thames by Fletcher, Sons & Furnell in 1826, she was constructed of wood throughout, registered at 550 tons, and measured 153 feet in length with a 27-foot beam. Popular with passengers and seemingly very successful, Shannon was absorbed into the BISP’s fleet when the DLSP went into liquidation in 1837 and thereafter her career details become obscure. It would appear however that she remained in service until 1845 and was then sold (and said by some sources to have been renamed Pearl). Relined. Scattered retouching throughout, in particular in the foreground.

Macqueen - a three-masted British merchant ship - by Charles Rosenberg after British marine painter William John Huggins. An impressive composition featuring the East-India Company ship making sail with a small sailing vessel flying a British flag on the right, and another three masted ship flying a Dutch flag on the far left. Artist William Huggins served numerous years at sea working for the East India Company, and was oftentimes asked to paint meticulously rendered pictures of the company's ships on his return to London. This piece depicts the Honourable Company Ship Macqueen setting sail with twelve other vessels in the wavy waters, with clouds billowing in the skies above. Macqueen - a three-masted British merchant ship - by Charles Rosenberg after British marine painter William John Huggins. An impressive composition featuring the East-India Company ship making sail with a small sailing vessel flying a British flag on the right, and another three masted ship flying a Dutch flag on the far left. Artist William Huggins served numerous years at sea working for the East India Company, and was oftentimes asked to paint meticulously rendered pictures of the company's ships on his return to London.
