Im originalen, vergoldeten Spitzbogenrahmen mit zwei Johanniterkreuzen Prince Frederick-Karl of Prussia (1825-1885), cavalry general, victor of the Battle of Düppeler Schanzen and commander of the Order of St. John, assists an infantryman wounded in battle alongside other Prussian officers. Friedrich-Karl, called "the red prince", wears the uniform of the Zieten Hussars, with the Order's cross on his neck. This painting is probably one of the works by Emil Hünten listed by Boetticher (see p. 596, no. 17).

At the behest of the Prussian crown prince, the painter Emil Hünten visited numerous military encampments and battlefields throughout the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The scenes he witnessed there formed the basis for the highly realistic paintings that he later carried out in his studio in Berlin, which secured his reputation as a painter. The present work is a fine example of the ongoing fascination with motifs glorifying the military achievements of the young empire, as it was painted 20 years after the winter of victory over the French. Depictions of horses were among this artist's greatest accomplishments, and he had practiced this skill since his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy under Wilhelm Camphausen. The medals, awards and place in the official Berlin cultural establishment attained by Hünten testify to the high esteem in which he was held throughout his lifetime.

Signed and dated lower right: Emil Hünten. 1867Emil Hünten learnt to paint in Paris and Antwerp, settling in Düsseldorf in 1851. He initially painted historic battle scenes, but later began to depict contemporary military motifs and participated in the German-Danish war as a member of the "Landwehr" in 1864. The motif of the present work could originate from this time. Emil Hünten was among the most important German battle and military painters of the 19th century, and his direct experiences of war lent his works a particular realism and attention to detail.

Large-format paintings by Emil Hünten fetch up to €20,000 on the international auction market. As a major historical painter Emil Hünten created many battle scenes. In the present work, created around 1880 he depicted a dramatic scene probably from the Franco-German War of 1870-71 in a loose brushwork. On a forest path a violent combat about a supply wagon between Prussian and French soldiers has erupted, which has already resulted in deaths and whose output is not yet in sight. The oil painting is relined and surrounded by a paper strip. Examination under UV-light reveals small retouched spots in the margin areas. The painting is newly varnished, the overall impression is very good. The frame is overall in good condition with occasional unobtrusive material losses. The painting measures 36 x 48 cm, the framed dimensions are 56 x 69.5 cm. Emil Hünten (1827-1902) Emil Hünten was born in Paris in 1827. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Hippolyte Flandrin and Horace Vernet, later in Antwerp under Gustave Wappers and Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans. In 1854 he moved to Düsseldorf, where he became the pupil of the renowned military painter Wilhelm Camphausen. During this time, Hünten executed many studies of horses and finished his first large-scale painting. Before the era of photography Hünten's works were of considerable documentary importance. As a soldier and later officer of the Landwehr the artist was able to give firsthand accounts of his experiences. Thus many military paintings, which impress due to their closeness to reality, were created. Today Emil Hünten is regarded as one of the most important German history painters of his time. Two mounted adjutants are depicted on the left, a group of soldiers is discernable in the background. The then already 86-year-old emperor is portrayed with an incredibly fine brushwork, usually only seen in pastel and watercolour drawings. The detailed face has the delicateness and refinement of a miniature painting. The naturalistic painterly realisation is striking. Here Hünten's talent as a skilled equine painter also becomes apparent. Although the German Emperor is the central motif of the work, the background is also presented in a very elaborate manner. The artist managed to create a festive, patriotic atmosphere without making the staging seem histrionic. A master piece by the artist of high aesthetic quality! The work is presented in a magnificent gilt wood and stucco frame. The painting by Emil Hünten is in good condition, the canvas is original. There is minor craquelure along the centre of the image. There are tiny touch-ups along the body of the horse and the emperor's uniform. The frame shows some signs of age and use with touch-ups here and there. Framed, the work measures 81.5 x 69.5 cm. A study on canvas for the mural in the Ruhmeshalle of the Berliner Zeughaus. King Wilhelm I hands his son Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, later to become Emperor Wilhelm III, the "Pour le Mèrite" order on the battlefield at Königsgrätz on the evening of 3rd July 1866. Depicted in the surrounding entourage are Bundeskanzler Fürst von Bismarck, Kriegsminister Graf von Roon, General von Moltke and General von Blumenthal. The "Die Schlacht bei Königsgrätz" mural was located in the Feldherrnhalle and was among the total of 12 historic paintings which were utterly destroyed during WWII. A second version is kept in the Deutschen Historischen Museum in Berlin. The handwritten dimensions in the upper right corner are the dimensions in feet and inches for the mural which was completed in 1886. König Wilhelm I. überreicht seinem Sohn Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm von Preussen, dem späteren Kaiser Wilhelm III. am Abend des 3. Juli 1866 auf dem Schlachtfeld von Königsgrätz den Orden "Pour le Mèrite". Im umgebenden Gefolge befinden sich Bundeskanzler Fürst von Bismarck, Kriegsminister Graf von Roon, General von Moltke sowie General von Blumenthal. "Die Schlacht bei Königsgrätz" befand sich in der östlichen Feldherrnhalle und zählte zu den insgesamt zwölf im zweiten Weltkrieg total zerstörten Historiengemälden. Eine zweite Fassung befindet sich im Deutschen Historischen Museum in Berlin. Die handschriftlichen Größenangaben in der linken oberen Ecke sind die Größenangaben in Fuss und Zoll für das 1886 vollendete Wandbild.

Theodor Fontane elaborated on the work of Emil Hünten, one of the most important German painters of battle scenes, at the Berlin Academy Exhibition of 1862, stating that: "The scenery is painterly: a creek dividing a grain field, right and left quietly rising and dotted with red poppies everywhere, here and there becoming the stage for an unequal fight. To the left, Russian grenadiers, partly hidden by trees, to the right, tribes of Asian prairie riders in colourful costumes, bearing bows and arrows and well-filled quivers on their backs. The picture as a genre object displays much study and accuracy through which it elevates itself into a higher category of skill."
