RAYMOND HUELSTER (1890-1955). OUTWARD BOUND / BY SOUTH SHORE LINE. 1929. 42x27 inches, 106x70 cm. Illinois Litho. Co., Chicago.

      Est: $3,000 - $4,000

RAYMOND HUELSTER (1890-1955) OUTWARD BOUND / BY SOUTH SHORE LINE. 1929. 42x27 3/4 inches, 106 3/4x70 1/2 cm. Illinois Litho. Co., Chicago. Condition B+ / B: restoration and overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears at edges. A student at Chicago's Art Institute, Academy of Fine Arts and the Campbell Academy of Fine Arts, Huelster was a painter who went on to design posters for the South Shore Railway. While very little is known about the group of talented artists working on posters for the railway in Chicago at this time, we do know that "all were chosen for their talent and artistic sensibility. Their posters are not about trains . . . but rather they explore the changing textures and colors of the Region, enticing curious visitors from Chicago to vacation and to investigate" (Duneland p. 3). Even though more than 160 posters were designed for the rail companies in Chicago between 1921 and 1929, they are extremely scarce and seldom come on the market. Duneland p. 119.
