Thought by many art critics to be California's greatest painter, Grace Carpenter Hudson was born near Ukiah in Potter Valley,California. The daughter of a newspaperman-photographer, she studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute in San Francisco and was a pupil of Virgil Williams at a time when San Francisco was an important art center. Shereturned to Ukiah, one hundred miles north along the "Redwood Highway" to teach painting. During this time she also became an illustrator for Sunset, Cosmopolitan, and Western Field Magazines. In 1890 she married John Hudson who was aPacific Coast ethnologist for the Field Museum and a researcher on the language and art of the Pomo Indians. Immersed in their culture, Hudson began to specialize in painting the Indian children she spent so much time with. These are the works shelater became so famous for even though she did travel and paint extensively throughout Europe and Hawaii. In 1904 she was commissioned by the Field Museum to paint portraits of the Pawnee Indians, with a special series of the Indian

        Featured in this lot is this Pawnee "Pipe and Bag" pastel on paper by Grace Hudson (born 1865 and passed 1937). The painting features a beautiful depiction of Pawnee decorated pipe and bag with a Parfleche envelope in the top of the painting. The frame features a floral corner decoration with gold paint to a hardwood frame. Grace Carpenter Hudson (1865–1937) was an American painter. She was nationally known during her lifetime for a numbered series of numerous portraits of the local Pomo Indians. She painted the first, "National Thorn", after her marriage in 1891, and the last in 1935. The condition of this pastel on paper is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this piece framed are 26 1/4" x 16 5/8" and the visible art measures 17 1/4" x 7 1/2". Provenance: This painting was sketched and painted by Grace Hudson and authenticated by her nephew Mark Carpenter; it comes from a private collection in California and was bought by Barney Goldberg; it was then acquired by Neil & Gail Elliott and finally sold to a Private Collector in Montana. This painting comes with evidence of Provenance.

According to Boynton's narrative, the painting "The Quail Hunter" introduced Thomas Mitchell to the Hudson gallery. Like many of her other subjects, a lifetime friendship developed between the artist and the Mitchells. Tom, his wives, his children and even his grandchildren became the subjects for more than 100 other Hudson paintings, easily the most numerous representation of any Indian family

        Grace Carpenter Hudson (1865-1937) oil on canvas landscape scene. Signed in the lower right G. Hudson. Hudson is known for Indian portraits, genre painting, weavings, rugs and sketches. At the young age of 16 she won the Alvord Gold Medal, presented by the President of the San Francisco Art Association for the best full-length study in crayon. Later in life, she had many stunning and extensive paintings of Indian artifacts but tragically they were destroyed in an earthquake and fire. She was noticed for her talent at an early age and has maintained the same reputation as her life went on. Overall size: 14 1/4 x 13 3/8 in. Sight size: 9 x 8 1/8 in.
