        Dec. 16, 2023

David Huchthausen amethyst color purple American studio glass cylinder vase.

        Est: $400 - $600

David Huchthausen amethyst color purple American studio glass cylinder vase. Unsigned. The History of Milropa Studios: Milropa Studios was founded in late 1975 by Steven Mildwoff (an early studio glass artist), Ron Coles, (an attorney in New York City) and Paul Seide, (a noted neon artist). The name was originally an acronym for Mildwoff – Ron – Paul. Milropa rented space in a section of the large Bent Glass Works factory located in Kew Gardens in the Borough of Queens, New York. Mildwoff's father Ben owned Bent Glass Works, which produced curved glass for cabinets and lampshades. Paul Seide designed the original production line, consisting primarily of paperweights. Ron Coles left the studio in 1977. Internationally recognized artist David Huchthausen joined Milropa Studios as the Design Director in December of 1978. He had just returned to the United States following two years in Vienna on a Fulbright Research Scholarship. Huchthausen designed a line of Air Trap vessels based on unique pieces that he had been creating between 1975 and 1979. The Milropa Air Trap line was available in six colors and four shapes, a small round vase, a taller oval vase, an open bowl with straight sides and a tall thin cylinder. They were produced in very limited quantities between 1979 and 1980. A small number of Air Trap paperweights were also produced using similar techniques. The Milropa production line was sold through the N.S. Gustin showrooms across the United States.  Most have the inscription ATV, which stands for Air Trap Vessel, followed by the production number and Huchthausen's name. Pieces designated EX-AP stand for Experimental Artists Proof. These were mostly produced for the N.S. Gustin showrooms, but some were test pieces that were never put into production. The Air Trap line designed by Huchthausen for Milropa was distinct from the much thicker, unique multi-layered air trap vessels that he had created using this technique. The production crew at Milropa included several glass artists went on to achieve notoriety in their own right. Gary Beecham, who had worked as Huchthausen's assistant in Austria, and John Brekke are the most noteworthy. Milropa Studios closed in September of 1980 after Huchthausen accepted a Professorship in Tennessee. Since the Air Trap line was produced for less than two years and the actual production records no longer exist, it is very difficult to determine exactly how many were produced, probably less than 250 of each design and far fewer of the tall cylinders and opal color overlays. David Huchthausen has been exhibiting internationally for 50 years and maintains an active studio in Seattle. His work is included in the permanent collections of more than 80 major museums worldwide. His sculpture can be viewed at www.Huchthausen.com .
