Photographer’s copyright as well as his name stamp, handwritten annotated “Jhg. 1929, Lehmden, Rainer, Mikl, Hutter, Fruhmann (1953-1954)” in pencil on the reverse A renowned portrait from 1954 by the same photographer depicts the five Austrian painters Johann Fruhmann, Josef Mikl, Arnulf Rainer, Wolfgang Hutter and Anton Lehmden, all born in 1929, and therefore confidently titled “Der Jahrgang 1929” (The birth-cohort of 1929). In this variant, taken five years later, the first mentioned artist is replaced by painter Helmut Leherb, born in 1933, what explains the peculiar title of this group portrait in the studio of Hutter. Deutsch: Vintage-Silbergelatineabzug, "double-weight" glänzendes Papier, in gutem Zustand.

Working on his photo books about Vienna, Hubmann found visual formulas for the city’s myths, narratives and attributes, for example in fading relics of its imperial history or morbid overtones of “Gemütlichkeit” (cosiness) and wine bliss. With his legendary Hawelka photo essay, he set up a lasting monument to the coffee house as a Viennese institution that offered a semi-public home to the narrow circles of cultural life.

Photographien von 1950–1980, Wien 1984, p. 218; Franz Hubmann, Das photographische Werk, Vienna/Munich 1999, p. 127; Margit Zuckriegl, Gerald Piffl (eds.), Franz Hubmann. Photograph, Vienna 2004, p. 113. Franz Hubmann, who only began his career as a photographer at the age of over thirty, after military service and a career as a textile technician, became the most influential figure of modern photojournalism in Austria in the post-war period. With the back view of an obese shopper at Brunnenmarkt in 1951, he sought to capture “unvarnished life” and at the same time created an effective composition that foreshadows the design principles that were to shape the magazine magnum. Hubmann was a co-founder of this influential “magazine for modern life” and worked as a style-forming life photographer and picture editor from 1954 to 1962. It is usually individual, often isolated, figures that stand as a symbol of the state of mind of a specific generation or the mood of a city.
