MAX HUBER (1919-1992) LOTTERIA DI MONZA / 500 MIGLIA DI MONZA. 1957. 53x38 inches, 134 1/2x96 1/2 cm. M & G. Pirovano, Milan. Condition B-: replaced lower left corner; repaired tears at edges affecting image; creases, tears and restoration in image and along horizontal fold; staining in image. Born in Zürich, Huber moved to Milan in the 1930s where he worked for Studio Boggeri. He returned to Switzerland briefly before settling again in Italy in 1946. He had a strong influence on Italian graphic design, mixing Constructivist principles with bold colors. His posters for La Rinascente, as well as those done for the Italian Automobile Club and Olivetti, can be considered masterpieces of a well balanced, wild imagination. Here, in one of several posters he designed for this prestigious Italian car race, Huber seamlessly mixes the colors of the Italian flag with a photograph of Formula Three racing cars speeding around a track. This is a paragon of motion graphics, reminiscent of Moholy Nagy's 1924 photomontage Pneumatik, which features a nearly identical mise en page. Huber p. 57, Fotoplakate 82.

      Est: $600 - $900

27 1/2x19 1/2 inches. Offiche Graphice Antonio Saita, Milan. Condition A: minor creases in image. After studying in Zurich, Max Huber went to Italy as Director of the Studio Boggieri. He returned to Switzerland during the war, where he worked with Max Bill, and then finally settled, once again, in Italy where he worked for the Triennial (winning a gold medal there) and did work for major clients like Olivetti and the department store La Rinascente. Remo Muratore, himself a graphic designer and architect, won two gold medals at the Triennial of Milan in 1940 and 1954, and worked for RAI, Pirelli and the Piccolo Theater of Milan. Both men created visual arrangements based on a modern use of photography with bold colors. Working in the same city and on the same projects, they became friends and occasionally joined forces, as they did with this poster for medicine: A photograph with a slightly turned perspective, vivid colors and bold, progressive typography all combine to make for a rare and fine example of a post war Italian advertisement.
