    Allegorie des Schicksals. -- Feder und Pinsel in Grau und Schwarz über Spuren von Graphit, auf Velin. 24,2 x 36,5 cm. Am rechten Rand signiert "S. Hruby" sowie unterhalb der Darstellung betitelt: "So-Führ-Mich-Hin". Um 1910-20. -- -- Rätselhaft ist die Zeichnung Sergius Hrubys, die der Künstler mit "So-führ-mich hin" betitelt hat. Ein athletischer Mann und eine schlanke, hochgewachsene Frau schreiten vor einer hellen Wand nach links. Wer hier wen führt, ist nicht eindeutig. Ist es die schicksalshafte Frau, deren schwarzer Kopfschleier sich im Wind bauscht und sich fast wie der Flügel einer Fledermaus ausnimmt, oder ist es der nach unten blickende Mann, der seine Begleiterin mit sanftem Druck voranschiebt? Diese eigenwilligen Kompositionen Hrubys, der seine Ausbildung u.a. an der Wiener Akademie erhielt, zeigen die Verbindung zu Künstlern wie Rudolf Jettmar und Max Klinger, deren Bildinhalte ebenfalls oft geheimnisvoll und mehrdeutig sind. -- -- - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

    Signed Sergius Hruby, 'Two Female Figures in a Garden'. Period Vienna Secessionist Art Nouveau Oil Painting on Panel Signed Sergius Hruby (Austrian, 1869 -1943) 'Two Female Figures in a Garden'. Vienna Secessionist period oil painting on panel. Signed lower right.  Sergius Hruby was a respected painter, graphic artist and illustrator, as well as a designer of ceramics and jewelry. As a student at the kunstgewerbeschule, first founded in 1867 by the austrian museum for art & industry, he received grants from various foundations, and in 1899 was appointed a teaching position at the teplitzer k.k. fachschule für thonwaren-industrie und andere kunst-gewerbe, the local technical school for the pottery-industry as well as other forms of the decorative arts. In 1920 he began teaching at the Wiener Lehr und Versuchsanstalt, among many well-known secessionist artists such as koloman moser and Josef Engelhart. Between 1925 and 1933, Hruby's illustrations were printed on a regular basis in the satirical magazine die muskete. In 1941 he was removed from the membership of the RRK, Reichskultturkammer, the german reichs' chamber of culture, founded by Joseph Goebbels, due to the fact that his wife was not of aryan descent. Thus, also losing his artists union affiliation with the Vienna Kunstlerhaus, he effectively lost his ability to produce work. He died two years later at the age of 74.

    Sergius Hruby, Austrian, 1869 to 1943, watercolor heightened with gold painting on paper depicting a design for an Art Nouveau poster, 1904. Signed lower right. Additionally inscribed and dated on the backside. Sergius Hruby was an Austrian artist, started out as an academic artist, mastered Art Nouveau around 1899, touched briefly on Japaneseism, and was infected with Symbolism around 1910, when all other artists in Europe had already moved on to the next style. In fact, he remained committed to Symbolism for the rest of his life. He is known for his Art Nouveau artworks. One of a kind artwork.
