Walter Howato Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1921 - d. 2003

Walter Howato was a Hopi artist from the First Mesa village of Sitcom'ovi, a member of the Reed Clan who carved actively from the 1940s until his death in 2003. He also worked for Walt Disney in Los Angeles and helped build the Glen Canyon Dam. He experimented with many combinations of paints to match the older style of katsina dolls he remembered from his childhood, and mixed his pigments with a white clay called tumma. He built up multiple layers of paint over clay, creating an aged appearance in his dolls.

  • Hopi Wood Butterfly Kachina Maiden by Walter Howato

Hopi Wood Butterfly Kachina Maiden by Walter Howato

    Est: $900 - $1,800

Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1921-2003), ca. mid-20th century CE. A magnificent cottonwood kachina sculpture depicting Polik-mana, the Butterfly Kachina Maiden, adorned with an elaborate kopatsoki (tableta) headdress. Beyond the finely carved wood, Howato has incorporated intricate ornaments, including painted leather ankle cuffs, yarn tassels (one representing a rain sash), magpie feathers in her hands, beaded necklaces with a silver naja pendant, a turquoise beaded jacla, nacre shell ornaments, Northern Flicker woodpecker feathers, a turquoise nugget, fluffy white goose down feathers, and human hair. Traditionally, Butterfly Kachina Maidens dance barefoot, their yellow-painted feet symbolizing the pollination of flowers. The right foot is labeled "PAL-HEK MANA," while the left foot bears the artist's signature, "W. Howato." A truly spectacular work, rich in symbolic and material detail. Size: 8" W x 27" H (20.3 cm x 68.6 cm) Size: 8" W x 27" H (20.3 cm x 68.6 cm) Size: 8" W x 27" H (20.3 cm x 68.6 cm) The Butterfly Kachina Maiden (Polik-mana) represents fertility, beauty, and agricultural abundance in Hopi and Puebloan traditions. She is depicted with an elaborate tableta (headdress) featuring cloud and butterfly motifs, symbolizing rain and transformation. Her associated Butterfly Dance is a harvest and social dance, performed by young women in pairs with slow, graceful movements that mimic butterflies. This dance emphasizes courtship, renewal, and the role of pollinators in sustaining crops. Through Polik-mana, the Hopi celebrate nature's cycles, female virtue, and the harmony between humans and the environment. Tall Hopi Wood Kachina Mudhead / Koyesmsi (Walter Howato)

    Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1921-2003), ca. mid-20th century CE. A large cottonwood kachina doll depicting a portly Mudhead Kachina, or Koyemsi, holding a drum with leather wristlets adorned with shells and a stone arrowhead. The figure is decorated with yarn tied around the waist and neck, while white feathers accent the nodules on its rounded head. Mudhead Kachinas are among the most recognizable and versatile Hopi figures, serving as clowns, drummers, announcers, and stand-ins for other kachinas during ceremonies. Their distinctive earth-toned heads with raised nodules give them their name, and they play an important role in both entertainment and spiritual guidance. Signed in pen on the felt base: "WH." This piece may be an early carving by Howato, as his later works are known for their intentionally aged and antique aesthetic. Size: 8.5" W x 23" H (21.6 cm x 58.4 cm) Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 to 2005 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. • Hopi Kokopelli Kachina Lifting Skirt by Walter Howato
    Mar. 20, 2025

Hopi Kokopelli Kachina Lifting Skirt by Walter Howato

    Est: $800 - $1,500

Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1921-2003), ca. mid-20th century CE. A large cottonwood kachina doll depicting Kokopelli disguised as the female counterpart Kokopelli Mana. The figure wears a black mask with a white stripe down the center, a conical striped beak, and large red feathered side hair whorls, signifying maiden status. But, the upper garment is carved from wood, while the lower skirt is made of felt - one corner playfully lifted to reveal a prominent phallus with pubic hair, a humorous nod to Kokopelli's role as both a fertility symbol and a mischievous trickster. This unexpected detail cleverly reinforces the dual nature of the character, blurring the lines between gender roles in a way that is both comical and symbolic. Signed in pen on the felt base: "W. HOWATO." This piece may be an early carving by Howato, as his later works are known for their intentionally aged and antique aesthetic. A heishi shell and turquoise stone necklace adorns the neck, adding an element of traditional ornamentation. Size: 7" W x 19" H (17.8 cm x 48.3 cm) Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 to 2005 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Aug. 05, 2021

Signed 20th C. Hopi Wood Koshare Kachina, Walter Howato

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Walter Howato (Native American, Hopi, Reed Clan, 1921-2003), ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fascinating kachina doll made from wood, fabric, shell, and turquoise, and painted with the characteristic stripes to represent a koshare (payakyamu) clown. This figure may be a Hopi dancer dressed as the koshare. He holds slices of watermelon in his hands and stands on delineated feet. The stripes are dry-brushed directly on the body to create a streaky appearance, and black circles and lines are painted around the eyes and mouth. Around his waist is a felt loin cloth with red and green yarn strands attached. A necklace of nacre, cowrie shells, and glass beads is strung around his neck. The dramatic headdress has two horns that are upright and decorated with corn husks at the tips. The big belly and watermelon represent gluttony. The foot is signed by the artist: "W HOWATO." This is a large, and very striking example with a jolly countenance. Size: 22" W x 29.75" H (55.9 cm x 75.6 cm); 30" H (76.2 cm) on included custom stand. This kachina is a sacred jester or trickster spirit, and dancers dressed as koshare will often parody and mock the audience to both invoke laughter and ridicule; they may also throw the watermelon at watchers! While humorous, the performances are meant as serious social commentaries. Provenance: private Littleton, Colorado, USA collection, between 1959 to 1962 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A fascinating wood kachina doll, painted in the style pioneered by Howato and described below. The doll stands slightly forward, bent at the waist, with a relatively large head with wide ears and a face that seems to show fright. Lightning-bolt-like motifs are on the nose and cheeks. The hands clench together at the waist, over a black loincloth. The body is pink, with dark pink abstract motifs painted on the legs and shoulders. Size: 4" W x 13.65" H (10.2 cm x 34.7 cm) Walter Howato was a Hopi artist from the First Mesa village of Sitcom'ovi, a member of the Reed Clan who carved actively from the 1940s until his death in 2003. Provenance: private S.
