    Dwight Clay Holmes (Texas, 1900-1986), windmill and trough, oil on canvasboard sight: 20 x 16 in., frame: 25 x 21 in. Provenance: Property from a Bulverde, Texas collection Dwight Clay Holmes began his study of art early, in Galveston, Texas, under the instruction of artist William de Leftwich Dodge. He entered Texas Christian University in 1918, studying formal art technique under instructor Dura Brokaw Cockrell. Impressively, Holmes was able to pay his way through college from the sale of his artwork, and after graduating he began to travel across Texas looking for landscapes to depict. He was especially drawn to the beauty of the Davis Mountains and surrounding country in West Texas. He also painted landscapes in Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico, also traveling abroad to Germany and Austria. However, he often returned home to paint in the parks of Fort Worth. Signed and dated "Dwight C. Holmes '54" lower left. Red stained and giltwood frame with beaded rabbet edge. 15 1/2" x 19 3/4" sight, 19" x 23" framed. Mid 20th century. Biography: Dwight Holmes was born in Oregon and moved to Texas at an early age. He studied at Texas Christian University and taught there during the 1920s. He studied in California with George Flowers and at the Pasadena Art Institute. Holmes was a member of the Fort Worth Art Association and American Federation of Arts.
