Frederick Hollyer (1837-1933) Possibly Frederick Hollyer (1837-1933) PLASTER MODEL FOR LORD RONALD SUTHERLAND GOWER'S SCULPTURE "IT IS FINISHED", c.1875. Platinum print, image/sheet size 410 x 290mm. This platinum print is a study of the plaster model for Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower's celebrated sculpture "It Is Finished." The final marble version of Gower's portrait of a crucified Christ was completed in 1875 and exhibited at London's Royal Academy. He gifted the bust to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1889 (ref.89.6). The present print of the maquette was possibly made by Frederick Hollyer, who was well-known for working in platinum beginning in the late 1870s. After moving to his studio in Kensington in 1870, Hollyer began making reproductions of works by Pre-Raphaelite artists including Lord Leighton, G.F. Watts, Edward Burne-Jones, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. At the time, Gower was a respected sculptor who exhibited at the Royal Academy, and Hollyer almost certainly would have met him as a result of their shared artistic circles. (Later, in 1890, Hollyer would make a portrait of Gower, now held by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, ref.7840-1938). Hollyer also struck up a professional relationship with the Victoria & Albert Museum, which "lasted over 30 years, selling his work to the museum at a generous discount of 10 – 25%. Curators at the time were particularly interested in photographs of the paintings taken during stages of development, for teaching purposes." (Frederick Hollyer - Life and Work, Victoria & Albert Museum Online Collection).

FREDERICK HOLLYER (BRITISH 1837-1933) AFTER HARRY BATES (BRITISH 1850-1899) FREDERICK HOLLYER (BRITISH 1837-1933) AFTER HARRY BATES (BRITISH 1850-1899) The Story of Psyche, triptych signed Harry Bates (lower right) photogravure 40.5 x 78, 40.5 x 28 cm Frederick Hollyer worked as an engraver, but soon moved to photography and became a member of the Photographic Society of London in 1865. He specialized in photographing art, to name a few, he reproduced paintings by Leighton, Watts, Edward Burne-Jones (1833 – 98) and Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 – 82), as well as the Holbein drawings at Windsor Castle. He also produced a photogravure of Harry Bates's silvered bronze bas-reliefs triptych of The Story of Psyche, the photographic reproduction was shown at the 39th annual exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society. In a review of the event, the photographer Alfred Horsley Hinton describes this artwork as " a finer or more complete idea of relief has probably never been produced than the reproduction of Harry Bates' 'Story of Psyche,' which is shown by F. Hollyer. The relief of the original clay modelling is so perfectly given that it seems difficult to see why, from an aesthetic point of view, such productions should not be largely used for high-class decoration ..." (The Photograph, November 1894, p. 270).

    Jan. 28, 2021

Hollyer (Frederick), attributed to. [The Drawings of E. Burne-Jones], [c. 1890].

    Est: £5,000 - £7,000

Hollyer (Frederick), attributed to. [The Drawings of E. Burne-Jones], composite album with 71 platinotype prints after drawings and studies by Burne-Jones, various sizes, all neatly presented on thick blue-coloured album leaves, some minor foxing and surface dirt, some leaves with discolouration to extremities, removal of bookplate from front pastedown, half calf, spine gilt and lettered 'Drawings of E. Burne-Jones', buckram rubbed and stained, slightly worn, folio, [circa 1890] Provenance: Ex-collection of Jon Schaefer (the Australian-Dutch art collector, 1941-2020) ⁂ Frederick Hollyer came from a family of engravers, and as a young man he began to develop an interest in photography. He later collaborated closely with several artists in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, notably Burne-Jones, Rossetti, and Lord Leighton, and is now regarded as an important advocate in visually promoting their work through the dissemination of his platinum prints, or platinotypes. Hollyer preferred the platinotype process due to the complex depth of tone that one was able to achieve. Several of the prints contained within the album correlate to known platinotypes by Hollyer, notably this an early image of 'Desiderium' before the phallus was removed (see Tate collection no. N02760). It would seem plausible that the present album was put together by Hollyer as a cohesive documentation of his prints after Burne-Jones' drawings.

Frederick Hollyer (1838-1933) - The Garden of Idleness, Courtesie and Fraunchise,

    Est: £300 - £500

Platinum print, After the drawing by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones Circa 1874 395 x 390mm. (15 1/2 x 15 3/8 in) Frederick Hollyer was from a family of engravers, but developed an interest in photography in the 1860s. His preferred process was the 'platinotype', or platinum print, for its rich tonal range. He collaborated closely with several artists in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, most notably Burne-Jones, Frederick Lord Leighton, and George Frederic Watts, and was considered to have been as important in promoting their work visually as Ruskin had been in writing, even prompting the artists themselves to re-evaluate their work, thereby recording early states that would otherwise be unknown to us.

Another exhibition note mounted on the backboard, from the Hayward Gallery Burne-Jones exhibition, 1975, states 'Hollyer also made a speciality of photographing Burne-Jones's work, especially the drawings, which he reproduced so faithfully that it is sometimes difficult to tell his prints from the originals'.
