Hollar's beautiful series is presented here in its entirety and in uniform, excellently preserved prints of the second edition printed by Clement de Jonghe in Amsterdam. Created in 1647, Hollar drew on drawings that had already been made during his first journey to the Netherlands in 1634. For example, two preliminary drawings for the depiction of a ship's hull in dry dock (Pennington 1264) have survived, one of which is dated 1634. The series was evidently very popular and was reprinted no fewer than four times well into the 18th century. It was also re-engraved.
