  • C. Ransome Gillet Holdredge Landscape Painting (1867)
    Jun. 29, 2023

    C. Ransome Gillet Holdredge Landscape Painting (1867)

    Est: $3,000 - $4,500

Ransome Gillet Holdredge (American, 1836-1899). Oil on canvas, 1867. Signed and dated lower left. A beautiful landscape painting by Ransome Gillet Holdredge, a 19th century American artist who traveled throughout the West depicting picturesque scenes from Utah and the Rockies, to Oregon and the Sierras, to Yosemite and the Bay Area, oftentimes residing with Native Americans. This is among Holdredge's earlier works, when the artist subscribed to Hudson River School tenets. The composition features a farmer and his ox in a manicured clearing bordered by groves of leafy trees rendered in their natural state. Beyond the tranquil clearing, the natural state of the land resumes with rolling hills followed by expansive mountain ranges beneath a glorious sky. Size (sight view): 11.5" L x 15.5" W (29.2 cm x 39.4 cm) Size (frame): 17.75" L x 21.75" W (45.1 cm x 55.2 cm) All is delineated with impressive artistry and technique in a pleasing color palette, set within a magnificent gilt frame that is extensively embellished with berried garland motifs gracing each corner. Of note: the gilding of the frame and the pigments of the painting have been tested via x-ray fluorescence. The gilding contains contains 56.6-58% gold and the pigments are consistent with the period. About the artist: Born in New York City in 1836, Ransome Holdredge traveled to San Francisco in the 1850s and became a draftsman at the Mare Island Navy Yard. During the 1860s and 1870s, Holdredge sojourned from the Bay Area to various picturesque locales, painting in the Hudson River School style. Then, in 1874, Holdredge traveled to Paris, and his style evolved toward the Barbizon School. After his return to San Francisco, Holdredge was immensely successful and his paintings received flattering reviews. Holdredge traveled throughout the American West, reportedly living with various Native American tribes. He was also a field artist for Scribner's and accompanied Major Reno during Custer’s Last Stand in 1876. A cofounder of the San Francisco Art Association, Holdredge was also a respected member of the Bohemian Club. His art has been collected by the Bohemian Club, the Oakland Museum, the Orange County Museum, the California Historical Society, the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, and the collection of the Oregon Historical Society. BIOGRAPHY: Born in New York City in 1836, Ransome Holdredge came to California via the Isthmus of Panama in 1858 and worked as a draftsman at the Mare Island Naval Yard. His paintings of the 1860s and early 1870s were signed "Holdridge" and were done in the realistic style of the Hudson River School.During this period he maintained a studio in San Francisco's Donahoe-Kelly Bank Bldg and exhibited locally. In 1874 he and Hiram Bloomer held a joint sale of their paintings to finance European studies. He left in that year and spent about two years studying in France. His obituary states that he was a field artist for Scribner's publications and was with Major Reno's troops at the time of the Custer massacre in 1876. After his studies in France, he returned to San Francisco with a distinctly different style. Paintings done after that time show the influence of the Barbizon School and were signed "Holdredge."His works were in great demand during his lifetime, received rave reviews by the local press, and were often considered superior to those done by William Keith. Holdredge traveled extensively throughout the Northwest, Southwest, the Rockies and western Canada, often living for long periods of time among the various Indian tribes.Due to his malnutrition and alcoholism, his paintings done during the latter part of his life were not of good quality. Like his friend Jules Tavernier, he made considerable money as an artist but did not manage his money well. He died penniless at the Alameda County (CA) Infirmary in April 1899 and was buried at public expense.
