Hans (1497) Holbein Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Miniaturist, b. 1497 - d. 1543

(b Augsburg, Germany, 1497; d London, England, 1543) German painter, designer of woodcuts, jewelry and stained glass. The Flemish portraitist, Hans Holbein The Elder, introduced his sons Hans the Younger and his elder brother, Ambrosius, to painting at a young age. In 1515, Ambrosius, who died prematurely four years later, and Hans left their father’s studio to begin independent work in Basel, Switzerland. For several years, the subject and medium of Han’s work varied; including murals, stained glass windows, altarpieces and portraits. Trips to Lucerne, Italy (c. 1517) and France (c. 1523) appeared to influence the religious and portrait paintings produced after his return to Basel. Holbein became initiated into book illustration with the design and completion of the title page woodcuts, as well as a series of pen and ink illustrations, for the book, “The Praise of Folly”, by the Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. Other illustrations include the title page for Sir Thomas More’s “Utopia” and Martin Luther’s “German Translation of the New Testament” and the “Dance of the Death” series. Around the time of his acceptance into the painters’ guild in 1519, Holbein married Elizabeth Binzenstock, the widow of a tanner. With the completion of three portraits of Erasmus in 1523, he began to establish himself as a portrait artist. The permeation of the Reformation in Basel in 1526 forced Holbein to travel to England to acquire new commissions. Furnished with letters of introduction from his patron, Erasmus, Holbein was soon commissioned to portray several great humanists; including a portrait and family portrait of the English statesman and author, Thomas More. Holbein skillfulness in portraiture eventually earned him the title of court painter under Henry VIII in 1536. Court figures, most of Henry VIII’s wives and son Edward are among some of the surviving portraits. The later years of Holbein’s oeuvre were characterized by a simplification and flattening of composition accentuated by fine attention to details. Holbein demonstrated mastery in the technical skills of portraiture. His ability in draftsmanship helped him to achieve this depth. Paintings were preceded by detailed pencil, ink and chalk drawings with notes concerning the dress, jewelry and important biographical information of his sitter. Hans the Younger Holbein remained in London until his death during the plague epidemic in 1543.

Hans II Holbein Umkreis oder Bartholomäus Bruyn II Werkstatt, Großes Dreiviertelporträt eines edlen Herrn, Ölgemälde des 16. Jhs.

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

Hans II Holbein Umkreis oder Bartholomäus Bruyn II Werkstatt, Großes Dreiviertelporträt eines edlen Herrn, Ölgemälde des 16. Jhs. Ohne Rahmen. Hans II Holbein circle or Bartholomäus Bruyn II workshop, Large three-quarter portrait of a noble gentleman, 16th century oil painting Hans II Holbein circle, 1497 - 1543, or Bartholomäus Bruyn the Younger (also: Barthel Brun/Bruyn) 1523/1525 - Cologne - 1607/1610, German Renaissance portrait painter, workshop, here: Three-quarter portrait of a noble gentleman in middle age. The well-fed sitter stands in front of a dark background in a calm, self-confident pose, his hands folded in front of his stomach and adorned with a golden monogram ring, possibly the seal of an order. In his hands he holds a pair of fine gloves. With these attributes, the black beret and the black clothing consisting of a cloak, scaled waistcoat and undergarment trimmed with a fine lace collar, the sitter is identified as a member of high rank, oil/wood, 92 x 70 cm. The original wooden panel was thinned later, probably in the 19th century, and mounted on a strong, bevelled wooden support. Under the quartz lamp, two retouched, even break lines on the left and on the right of the sitter can be recognised, as well as a few smaller spot retouchings. The two even break lines suggest an original situation consisting of three oak panels joined side by side, probably once parquetted, as a support. Without frame.

    Feb. 28, 2024

Very interesting Praying Lady on a German school panel from the first half of the 16th century, with an old inscription attributed to Hans Holbein (Germany, 1497–1543)

    Est: €12,000 - €14,000

Oil on panel with important period ebonized and gilded Flemish frame: 30 x 22 cm, measurements: 63 x 60 cm framed. Hans Holbein the Younger (Germany, 1497–1543) was a prominent German painter and engraver who, in addition to being one of the masters of 16th-century portraiture, designed book covers, stained glass windows, and jewelry. Hans Holbein lived during the times of the Protestant Reformation in Germany, he joined it and there he obtained numerous clients such as Erasmus of Rotterdam. It was he who recommended him to go to England to make a living, and he found a wealth of patrons, from Thomas More to Anne Boleyn or Thomas Cromwell. King Henry VIII appointed her as his official painter and there she was able to give free rein to his creativity and talent. Not only did he make hundreds of portraits, of which he was already a master, but all kinds of themes. He often introduced all kinds of symbolism, trompe l'oeil and experiments in the paintings alongside those portrayed. Of unusual realism for the time, his painting was extremely precise. Thanks to him we know what Erasmus or More were like (those portraits are fucking photographs), but apparently Holbein was too much of a perfectionist and was never completely satisfied with his work. Every hair, every pore of skin, every thread of a dress was important. Reference bibliography: Foister, Susan; Ashok Roy; & Martyn Wyld. Making & Meaning: Holbein's Ambassadors. London: National Gallery Publications, 1997. ISBN 1-85709-173-6. Provenance: property of an important private collection, Barcelona.

JUNGER MANN MIT SCHWARZEM BARETT Öl auf Holz. 19,7 x 14,6 cm.
