Condition A- / B+: repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image; creases in margins and image. Framed. This is an example of Hohlwein's exploration of depth through the use of color, and is one of the large number of travel posters he designed. Here, for the Bodensee (Constance Lake, which lies between Germany, Austria and Switzerland), he depicts the giant statue of a lion that guards the harbor at Lindau, and uses seagulls and the distant mountains to convey the vastness of the body of water. He also uses a string of flags to denote the different nationalities represented around the lake. Another variant says "Lake of Constance" in the upper title, with a solid black box along the bottom. This is the English version. Hohlwein / Stuttgart 292.

Condition B+: margins trimmed off; minor abrasions and restoration at edges; minor abrasions in image. Framed. Animals were a continual source of inspiration for Hohlwein, and he drew them with an ease and deftness born of respect. In 1912, he had three commissions for zoos almost simultaneously; he designed two for the Munich Zoo, and one for the Nuremberg Zoo depicting a zebra and a parrot. Of them all, this panther and leopard design is one of his most famous and enduring images. It was reissued with new colors and composition in 1914, promoting a festival at the Zoo (DFP-III1476), and then reprinted in 1965. Against a patterned brown background, the solid mass of the black panther, with a subtle and sophisticated green outline, makes the leopard stand out starkly. The image of the leopard is a virtuosic composition rarely equaled in graphic art. With - separate name plate that reads "Bought by Arthur Richmond Taber, '17 at Munich in 1912 Presented by his Parents to Ivy Club in February 1920. This is the version without text, which is usually printed in either three or four lines. From 1908 to 1914, the Munich-Herrsching Ceramic Works was a prominent producer of Jugendstil pottery. Hohlwein's graphic still life with three vases is an exceptional design, in which the window is reflected in the vessels, an effect that Hohlwein achieves using the white of the paper. The bold image is further strengthened by the organization of the typography which is firmly aligned with the width of the image. For this cigar and cigarette merchant, Hohlwein has rejected the clichéd visual motif of the "elegant man smoking." Instead, he takes a bold, dramatic approach and depicts Christopher Columbus holding one of his ships, symbolizing that by discovering America, Columbus enabled tobacco to be brought back to Europe. Hohlwein was a passionate huntsman and horse rider. In this series, he brilliantly portrays all the aspects and sequences of a day at the race track: the arrival of spectators by coach, the riders in front of the grandstand, presenting the favorite horses, riders in the midst of the race, the drama of an overthrow, and the winning jockey. "The Turf series shows the marked influence with exceeding clarity of English archetypes, particularly that of William Nicholson, one of the two 'Beggarstaff Brothers'" (Hohlwein, p. 133).     This is a poster for the 1936 Winter Olympic Games, which were held in Germany. A victorious skier basks in the glory of his victory in the Alpine location that was used for the ski events, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This design was extremely popular; it was printed in 13 languages and also used on smaller flyers and brochures. This is the English version. The Winter Olympic Games were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from February 6 - 16. These Games featured 17 events in 4 sports. These preceded the better known 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany where Jesse Owens won multiple medals and upset Adolf Hitler and his rising Nazi regime. Ludwig Hohlwein (1874 - 1949) is an important figure in the history of poster design. He was trained as an architect but changed his career to advertising at age 30 (in 1904). He was among first artists to reject the Art Nouveau style and helped to usher in the Art Deco style in Europe. Over his career he created over 400 posters, and often depicted animals, such as this image for Panther brand shoes from the 1920s. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

    Original vintage advertising pamphlet for Hohensonne tanning lamps with artwork by Ludwig Hohlwein (1874 - 1949). The cover shows a blonde woman in a green wraparound dress, holding a young child on her knee - both are smiling and looking off to the side, bathed in light. Red text reads Gesundheit - Schonheit - Lebensfreude - durch die Hohensonne Original Hanau / Health - Beauty - Joie de vivre - through the Hohensonne Original Hanau. The inside and reverse of the pamphlet features text about the benefits of the tanning lamp - ‘Sun the whole year round’ - alongside photographs of people using the lamps. The Hohensonne was produced by Heraeus Noblelight, Germany’s leading manufacturer of medical phototherapy lights at the time. It was so successful - in part thanks to Hohlwein’s advertising posters - that the brand name ‘Hohensonne’ was used generically to describe tanning lamps in German. Ludwig Hohlwein is considered one of Germany’s most prolific and talented poster artists; an architect by training, he produced bold, eye-catching plakatstil designs. The brewery was built in 1739 and was in operated as a family business until 2009, when it was taken over by the Kauzen-Brau bewery. The poster features an image of a white goat sticking its tongue out with a glass of foamy beer against black background. The Wolf Biere logo in the bottom left corner features an illustration of a wolf and a pint of beer and blue text over white background. Text in red below the image reads - Bock. Brauerei Wolf Fuchsstadt Bei Wurzburg / Bock. Wolf Fuchsstadt Brewery near Wurzburg. Bock is of German origin, traditionally it is a strong lager, sometimes an ale, and can range from light copper to brown colour. Very good condition, creasing.
