Little is known about the seventeenth century painter Jacob Hogers. Drawings of this artist are extremely rare and seldom appear on the art market. The origins of Hogers lay in Deventer, but his painting style was clearly influenced by painters of biblical scenes mainly of the Haarlem School, such as Pieter de Grebber (ca. 1600-1652/3). His wife Sara Abrahams was born in Haarlem and during his studies Hogers must have lived there. In 1641 Hogers married in Amsterdam, where he could come into contact with works of the Rembrandt School.
