    • Remigius Hogenberg - Turnip wagon - Hieron. Bosch
      Sep. 22, 2022

Remigius Hogenberg - Turnip wagon - Hieron. Bosch

      Est: €400 - €1,200

Extremely rare etching based on the theme of the Haywain, by Hieronymus Bosch. His great allegory of avarice enjoyed a certain vogue in Brabant during the third quarter of the sixteenth century. This is one of only a few examples and surely this Turnip Wagon of Remigius Hogenberg is the most original. Apparently unknown to Lebeer and other Belgian scholars, a fine impression can be viewed at the Royal library in Brussels. The print is an interesting and significant variant on Bosch's composition, the most eye-catching of course, the replacement of the hay wagon by the turnips . This print here is discussed by Walter S. Gibson in Renaissance Quarterly , Volume 32 , Issue 2 , Summer 1979. For a selection of this very interesting text see the section literature below. Scene: A man and woman are making music on a farm cart full of turnips, behind the cart a procession of men and women trying to get hold of as many turnips as possible. On the right in the foreground a cleric watches nuns boiling the turnips. This is a work from the early part of the career of Remigius Hogenberg, before he fled to France in 1567 to escape the tyranny of the Duke of Alva. The print is signed with his RHB monogram bottom middle on the stone.
