William (1697) Hogarth Sold at Auction Prices

William Hogarth's artwork ran the gamut from portraiture to more satirical works. William Hogarth's paintings were influenced by French and Italian paintings and engravings of the human form. As a realist, his paintings took on the expression and movement of humanity and often depicted the more undesirable parts of society. Hogarth prints vary from weddings to traveling showgirls and festivals.

William Hogarth's artwork also included engravings that were so frequently copied that he lobbied for the Copyright Act of 1735 to help protect him and his fellow artists. His satirical engravings and work in literary endeavors remain among his most recognizable works to this day. Around the 1740s, he began doing sittings of middle-class personalities. You can buy antique portrait paintings online or at auction to bring character and personality to your home.

                    Fourth state of four; 9 1/8" x 11 7/8", printed on an early laid type paper; foxing in border area.   "Created in 1762, this engraving is thought to have been brought by the artist's wife to Boydell of London for publication in 1790.  These engravings have a complicated publishing history. Plate ‘b’ was unfinished at Hogarth’s death and it is unclear whether this first proof state was published by Mrs Hogarth late in life or as the first of the sequence of later states by Boydell after 1790. To further complicate the issue, the contemporary collector George Stevens (1736-1800) has written on his copy of this state that it was ‘taken during the life time of Hogarth’, but it was not until June 1781 that he (according to Malone’s letter to Lord Charlemont) ‘ransacked Mrs. Hogarth's house for obsolete and unfinished plates’, so perhaps the inscription may be taken with a pinch of salt. (sic) With The Times Plate I Hogarth took a decisive political, and at this time unpopular position to support the peace movement against the Seven Years' War (also called the French Indian War) spearheaded by King George III and his chief advisor, Lord Bute. Bute's opponent and leader of the Commons, William Pitt, supported the interests of the war and the economic profit derived from the colonial exploitations it permitted. In this first state Henry VIII (Pitt in later states) marches on stilts to fan the fires of war which the Union Officer of the King is trying to extinguish with a fire engine. William Beckford, the Lord Mayor and Pitt follower, who made a fortune through tobacco and sugar plantations in Jamaica, appears in the doorway on the left and points to a signboard advertising a naked Indian that reads 'Alive from America.' In the foreground women die of starvation in the street and a drunken fiddler plays his violin. Plate II of The Times depicts a more peaceful and prosperous Britain. Plants are nourished by water spouting from the monument of George III, with the elegant Lord Bute as the chief gardener of the State, controlling access to the King. A gigantic palette dangling from the facade of a newly-erected public building indicates that under the reign of the young King art flourishes. 'Ms Fanny' (a reference to the Cock Lane Ghost) and 'Wilkes', a fervent opponent of the King and Bute, appear in the pillory, while to the left those few members of Parliament who are still awake, including Pitt with bandaged legs, shoot at the dove of peace in the sky." (Gallery notes)

                    Attributed to William Jones,  British fl.1738-1749-  A lady nursing her child in an interior;  oil on canvas, 77 x 63.9 cm.  Provenance:  Property from Hooton Pagnell Hall, Bonhams, London, 1 December 2015, lot 79.  Note:  Much like the works of his contemporary, William Hogarth (1697-1764), Jones's paintings often show interiors featuring elaborately dressed figures, which offer glimpses into the private lives of the people and families portrayed. Jones appears to have been particularly interested in portraying the lives of women (often without the presence of men), and the parts of women's lives that were often private or hidden from public view. The subject of the present work, which shows a woman nursing her child while looking boldly out at the viewer, is a typical example of this. The intimate setting of the subject within a dimly lit, private interior strongly recalls Jones's painting entitled 'Fortune Telling' ,which was offered at Sotheby's on 13-20 September 2023 (lot 40).

                    Follower of William Hogarth,  British 1697-1964-  Portrait of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat;  oil on canvas, 66.1 x 49.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present painting is a near-contemporary interpretation of William Hogarth's 1746 print of Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (1667-1747). Lovat was a prominent Jacobite, supporting the Stuart claimant 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788) at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. After the Highlanders' defeat, Lovat was charged with High Treason and sentenced to death, becoming, in 1747, the last person in Britain to be executed by beheading.  Hogarth met with Lord Lovat in 1746, shortly before the elderly Scotsman’s execution, while they were both staying at a St Albans inn. The artist made sketches of Lovat during that meeting (like the example held in the collection of the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston, PRSMG : P985), and the etching which resulted from this sitting was published that same year.  Hogarth’s etching was widely circulated and became popular as soon as it was published, providing inspiration for many other artists working at the time. A portrait of Lord Lovat similar to the example presented here, which was previously attributed to Hogarth himself but is now also believed to be an early copy of the 1746 print, is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery [NPG 216]. The minor variations in colouring between that portrait and the present version suggest that both works were not exact copies but rather free interpretations of Hogarth's original. The early popularity of Hogarth’s print is further attested by a late 18th/early 19th century head study after the portrait in the collection of the British Museum [1893,0516.390].  In the 1746 etching, Hogarth has depicted Lord Lovat counting on his fingers, allegedly counting the number of clans who supported the prince during the Jacobite rising. Perhaps aware of the significance of this aspect of Hogarth's portrait, the artist of the present painting appears to have paid particular attention to the rendering of the sitter's hands, which are picked out with precise brushstrokes.

                    Two hand-colored engravings after William Hogarth (1697-1764) which illustrates Samuel Butler’s Hudibras. These both come with a COA with is attached to the back of each framed engraving. It states at the bottom of each engraving was published in London by G & J Robinson, Pater Nofter Row in 1802. However, the COA states that these were produced between 1822 and 1830. They are both triple matted and framed under glass in a gold and copper toned frame. With frame, each measures 22 inches x 29 inches. These were acquired from a Virginia estate.
