        Circa 1822 A.D. A print from Hogarth's copperplate engraving dated 16th May 1763 and entitled John Wilkes Esq depicting the subject seated wearing 18th century frockcoat and breeches, holding a pole with a cape marked 'Liberty'; subtitled Drawn from the Life and Etch'd in Aquafortis by Willm. Hogarth. 35 grams, 35.8 x 23.3 cm (14 1/8 x 9 1/8 in.). English collection formed in the 1990s. UK art market. Property of an Essex gentleman. John Wilkes (died 26 December 1797) was an English radical politician and magistrate, first elected to Parliament in 1757. During the American War of Independence, he was a supporter of the rebellion. At the age of 65, he retired from politics and took no further part in reforms following the French Revolution, such as Catholic Emancipation in the 1790s. [No Reserve]
