              Oct. 07, 2024

Vlastimil Hofman (1881–1970) Allegory of old age - 1909

              Est: €16,000 - €24,000

Hofman was born in Prague to a Czech father and a Polish mother. The family moved to Kraków in 1889. From 1896 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, then from 1899 to 1901 in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. When the war began, Hofman moved to Prague and later lived in Paris before returning to Kraków in 1921. Around 1921 his name changed from Hofmann to Hofman. He is a representative of symbolism and primarily created religious and mythological scenes in rural surroundings. A half-length portrait of an old woman occupies the foreground. She has put her hands on her cane. Although her face is marked by age, it radiates spiritual strength. Her eyes are half-closed, seeming to look more internally than at the outside world. Maybe she will reflect on her life in the twilight of her life. A lavender-colored scarf lies over her head and shows her gray hair above her forehead. A young, blonde woman with a pale complexion appears behind her on the right, her hand on her chest. She tilts her head slightly, looks down and expresses pity with her mouth open. On her head she wears a wreath of white and red roses with thorns. The wreath perhaps symbolizes the joys and pains of love. The left half of the picture is a view of a village in autumn. The season obviously refers to the autumn of life. At the bottom left you can see a young woman and a man dressed in black in civilian clothes. They are slightly turned towards each other, but their relationship to each other is unclear. There seems to be an indefinable tension between them. Behind them you can see two satyrs on the wall. They represent the animal forces of nature and perhaps reflect the passion behind the bourgeois facade. Oil on cardboard 49.5 × 70 cm. Signed: Wlastimil Hofmann / 1909

The unique and very rare Cubist coffee service designed by Vlastislav Hofman for the Artěl production undoubtedly belongs to the iconic and timeless models of pre-war Europe. Elegance enhanced by Hofman's understanding of design rests on the simple principle of intersecting vertical and horizontal red lines. The sugar bowl and teapot are finished on the lids with a cone-shaped handle. Offered coffee service has not yet appeared on the Czech or foreign markets. In addition, a similar service together with teacups is in the collections of UMPRUM Prague. References: Švestka J. and T. Vlček, Czech Cubism 1909-1925, 1991, p. 291. Excellent condition. Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Vlastimil Hofman (Polish, 1881-1970) - Portrait, Oil on Board, 1937. Signed and dated. With a certificate of  authenticity. 16.5x10cm. Wlastimil Hofman was a Polish painter, one of the more popular painters of the interwar and postwar years. Hofman was born Vlastimil Hofmann in Prague to Ferdynand Hofmann, a Czech, and Teofila Muzyk Terlecka, a Polish woman. In 1889 Vlastimil's family moved to Krakow in Poland, where he attended St Barbara's School and then the Jan III Sobieski high school. In 1896, he became a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he studied under, i.a., Jacek Malczewski. In 1899 he went to study painting at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1902 he had his first showings in an exhibition by the "Sztuka" society. Further exhibitions followed in Munich, Amsterdam, Rome, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, and Warsaw. In 1904 he painted the first of his village (or peasant) "Madonnas". In 1905 he started the cycle of pictures called "Confession" which brought him international recognition. In 1907 he was the first Polish painter to be made a member of the Gallery of the Vienna Secession. When his professor, Jacek Malczewski, was appointed the Rector of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts in 1912, Hofman obtained a teaching post there. With the outbreak of World War I, in 1914–1920 he lived in Prague and then in Paris, marrying his beloved Ada in 1919. Back in Krakow in 1921, he and his wife lived in a villa on Spadzista Street, later renamed Hofman Street in his honor. Sometime around 1922, influenced by his friendship with Jacek Malczewski, he changed the spelling of his name from Czech to a Polonised - Wlastimil. Malczewski died in 1929. In September 1939 Hofman fled from the Nazi invasion, mainly as a result of hiding Czech refugees (including later President, Ludwik Swoboda). Escaping the German Nazis he and his wife found themselves on the part of the Polish territory invaded by the Soviet Red Army after 17 September 1939. He managed to avoid Soviet captivity, though in Pomorzany he witnessed Polish soldiers being transported to camps inside Soviet Russia, among them officers sent to Kozelsk. He reportedly "showed the Polish POWs a lot of compassion and tirelessly painted their portraits on small pieces of cardboard. The portraits were then to be sent to their families." On all accounts it is then that he befriended Zdzislaw Jastrzebiec Peszkowski, who on the day before the transport to Kozelsk left in Hofman's care the regiment's money. According to Hofman biographical notes, he managed to join the soldiers of the Czech Legion and with them traveled through Ternopil, Istanbul, Haifa and Tel-Aviv to Jerusalem Palestine, which is where he spent the remainder of the war. In 1942, he published a book of poetry called Through Darkness to Freedom. He returned to Krakow in June 1946. In May 1947 at the suggestion of his friend Jan Sztaudynger the Hofmans moved to Szklarska Poreba in the Sudety mountains. In July they received a house there, which they called - Wlastimilowka. In the period 1953–1963 he produced religious paintings for the local church, including "Four Evangelists", "The Way of the Rosary", "The Way of the Cross", "The Adoration of the Child". He also produced many portraits of local people, sports figures - especially footballers from his favorite Wisla Krakow team - and also self-portraits. In 1961, he was awarded the Cross of the Order of the Polish Renaissance. Wlastimil Hofman died on March 6, 1970 and he and his wife are buried in the parochial cemetery in Szklarska Poreba, next to the Corpus Christi Church, run by the Franciscan Fathers and decorated with pictures and banners painted by Wlastimil Hofman with the painting entitled - Jesus Christ with the Holy Eucharist. PROMISED LAND

              Est: -

Rare work by the Czech-Polish symbolist Wlastislav Hofman, who made a significant contribution to art between the two great wars. The work is directly related to the earlier painting of the Coronation of the Madonna, where the Virgin Mary, clothed in traditional costume, receives a crown and two children, one of whom plays the gudok, watch her. In the image of the Promised land, we see the Madonna in the same familiar landscape and also in clothing with folklore elements. Only the plot and the characters of the painting moved a bit forward in time, and an angel suddenly appeared at Mary's feet. Wlastimil Hofman was especially fond of the Marian theme, which is reflected in all his works. He gives the theme a lyrical, intimate character. We deal here with folk stylization, characteristic of young Polish artists. Exhibition label from Krakov gallery from behind. Technique: Oil on plywood, Signed: Upper left "Vlastimil 1911"

Vlastimil Hofman (Poland, 1881-1970) - Melancholia, Oil on Board, 1960. Signed and dated. Framed. 44x17cm. Frame: 58x31cm.
