Frankreich Hoffstadt, Friedrich Landschaft mir Felsenschloss und Speerträgern. 1821. Feder auf Papier, voll auf Unterlage aufgezogen. 45,5 x 34,5 cm. Insgesamt wohlerhalten. Landscape with a castle and spearmen. Pen-and-ink drawing on paper, fully mounted on backing. Monogrammed and dated. Mounted in spots on backing. - Friedrich Hoffstadt (1802-1846) studied law and worked as a lawyer in Munich, Frankfurt and Aschaffenburg. However, he gained particular importance as an artist with a special interest in medieval architecture. Strongly influenced by Romantic currents, the self-taught artist created illustrations for La Motte-Fouqué's "Magic Ring", among others. He published the fruits of his research, especially on pointed arch art, in works such as the "Gothic ABC Book" or the " Basic Rules of Gothic Style for Artists and Craftsmen". The estate of the artist was acquired by the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich. - This meticulously executed drawing shows a probably imaginary medieval castle embedded in an opulent rocky landscape. In some elements it reminds of some famous castles, which, however, only existed in this form a few decades later, for example Neuschwanstein Castle and Liechtenstein Castle. - Browned and stained. Overall in good condition.
