        Münzer / Modellhut-Ausstellung. 1920.

        Est: $1,000 - $1,200

ARTIST: REINHARD HOFFMÜLLER (1894-1975) SIZE: 38 x 25 1/4 in./96.5 x 64.2 cm PRINTER: Harry Bunzel, Berlin DESCRIPTION: Of the two posters Hoffmüller designed for the German hat designer August Münzer, this is the more abstract and graphically refined—and it also demonstrates the impact that Art Deco and abstraction started to have on his work. With no model to fill the frame, Hoffmüller is able to focus the viewer's attention on the hat and the company's information, which are cleverly united through the hat's bold bands that lay across the letters like garlands. His hand-drawn type is also well considered—his addition of orange lines to 'Auguste Münzer' makes for a dynamic composition. (German; Fashion; Art Deco)

        Mohren Schloss. 1919.

        Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: REINHARD HOFFMÜLLER (1894-1975) SIZE: 37 1/2 x 28 7/8 in./95.2 x 73.3 cm PRINTER: Harry Bunzel, Berlin DESCRIPTION: In the heart of Berlin's nightlife scene, a young Hoffmüller could be found designing posters for bars around Friedrichstrasse. Here, he's chosen to depict a perfectly-dressed waiter eagerly sipping from his champagne cocktail. At the time, it was trendy to have black waiters and servants working in restaurants and bars, and they were thus frequently the subjects of advertisements. The Mohren Schloss, or Mohren Castle, claimed to have "the most elegant wine bar and bar" on the street—a lofty claim for a neighborhood ripe with popular venues. (Alcohol; German; Art Deco)

A local poet, K. Mergerle von Muhlfeld, summed it up: ‘Thick air, gossip with booze, kids begging, freshly-painted gigolos, Night clubs, lewd dancing, nude dancing. Cigarettes, cigarettes, cocaine! That’s Berlin’” (Hoffmüller). This poster for the Modern Dress Ball at the Philarmonic expresses that sentiment perfectly with its leering, suggestive mascots.

REINHARD HOFFMÜLLER (1894-1958) MOHREN SCHLOSS. 1919. 28 3/4x37 5/8 inches. Harry Bunzel, Berlin. Condition A. By the age of 25, Hoffmüller was having lots of fun designing posters for the bars around Friedrichstrasse, one of the centers of Berlin's crazy nightlife. Typically his posters depict couples enjoying the various venues in the neighborhood, but several of his images are slightly more daring. Trueherz (see Swann Modernist Poster auction #2039, lot 9) shows only the heads of a couple, getting close over a cocktail glass. This image also takes a different approach as an insouciant waiter is licking some of the foam from atop a champagne cocktail. It was trendy during the era to have black waiters and servants working in restaurants and bars, and they were frequently depicted on posters. Hoffmüller, 36
