The scene conveys an atmosphere of serenity and enjoyment. Hoffmann' (lower left), 55.5 x 121.3 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 27 November 1992, lot 20 (£11,550).  Private Collection.  Note:  Hoffmann was a Baltic German painter from Estonia who was best known for his landscapes and colorful depictions of Estonian farmers. He went to Germany in 1872, where he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In Germany he studied under and gained influence from painters Eduard von Gebhardt (1838-1925), Eugen Dücker (1841-1916) and, most notably, Gregor von Bochmann (1850-1930). He later travelled to Saint Petersburg where, in 1884, he was granted the status of 'Free Artist' by the Imperial Academy of Arts. While there, he continued to participate in international exhibitions in Vienna, Berlin and elsewhere.

Hofman'] lower left Dimensions: 85 x 110 cm Stucco frame: 115 x 141 cm Good condition Provenance: Baltic private collection  Spacious landscape with an idyllic figure staff age in typical earthy colors Condition: The painting is in good condition. The margins with usual framing marks. The inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouching to the sky. The frame bears some small bumps and rubbings to the corners and edges. The upper stucco decoration shows a slightly loosened patch. The painting of the inner frame has been added. The canvas measures 85 x 110 cm. The total dimensions, including the frame of 115 x 141 cm. Oskar Georg Adolf (Adolfovitch) Hoffmann (1851-1912) Born in 1851 in Dopat, Oskar Georg Adolf (Adolfovitch) Hoffmann studied between 1871 and 1878 at the art academy of Düsseldorf inter alia with Andreas Müller and Eugen Dücker. In 1882 Hoffmann was active in St. Petersburg and since 1884 free member of the Russian Imperial academy of arts. His works were exhibited in Düsseldorf, Riga, St. Petersburg and Vienna, and in 1894 the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. In addition to his work as a portraitist his subject is characterized by Estonian landscapes in accordance with the Hague School. They mostly depict idyllic, spacious scenes of rural life, in the earthy coloring and misty light with low horizon lines. In addition, he created various etchings.
