In 1985, the Coty Awards were discontinued with the last presentation of the awards in September 1984, the CFDA Awards fulfill a similar role. It was casually referred to as "fashion's Oscars" because it once held great importance within the fashion industry and the award ceremonies were glitzy galas. Donald Brooks (January 9, 1928 – August 1, 2005) was an American fashion designer and creator of the "American Look" founded in the 1950s and 1960s. He had an immense passion for stage and film, designing well over 3500 costumes. Brooks efforts were recognized by an Emmy Award and numerous other honors; he was also nominated three times for the Academy Award and once for a Tony. Malvina Hoffman a New York sculptor who had studied with Rodin. She was commissioned by Marshall Field to create an exhibition of over 100 sculptures that were exhibited at the Marshall Field Museum in Chicago. The New York Times called it "probably the largest commission ever granted any sculptor," male or female. Over 10 Million people visited the exhibition during its 30 year run, from 1933 into the 1960s when it was dismantled. About 50 of the works have more recently been returned to museum galleries for exhibition.
