A fine impression in fine condition Sheet measures 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. Irwin David Hoffman was born on March 8, 1901 in Boston, Massachusetts to Russian immigrants Jacob and Minnie Hoffman. Ge attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as a 15 year old and graduated from there. At age 19 he had his first exhibition in Boston. In 1924 Hoffman received the most prestigious award given by the Boston Museum School, the Paige Traveling Scholarship. The scholarship allowed him to travel abroad in 1927, studying and painting all across Europe. It was then that he not only came face to face with the traditions that he had learned in school, but perhaps more importantly, became aware of the modern trends that were sweeping the European art scene at the time. After completing his studies overseas (he also visited Russia in 1929), Hoffman set up a studio in New York City, which he maintained until his death. Irwin Hoffman married Dorothea Geyer in Manhattan on April 9, 1930. New York City was his base from which to work, but his love for new experiences caused him to often tag along with his brothers. Hoffman's brothers owned a mining company and prospected in the southwest, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The artist in Hoffman was heavily influenced by the people of the small villages that he visited while with his brothers' mining company Hoffman was adept at printmaking, working in intaglio and lithography, as well as receiving honors for his painting and sculpture. He published 15 prints with Associated American Artists (AAA) in New York between 1934 and 1945. He was a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, Society of Independent Artists, Associated American Artists, Society of American Etchers, and the Print Club of Albany. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections throughout the country. Irwin D. Hoffman died in New York in March of 1989.

Irwin D. Hoffman New York, Massachusetts, (1901 - 1989) untitled autumn landscape oil on canvas. signed lower right. Biography from the archives of askART: Irwin D. Hoffman, painter, etcher, sculptor and lithographer was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1901. He was one of four sons belonging to a set of Russian immigrants. Irwin stood out at an early age as being gifted artistically and at the age of fifteen he was enrolled as a special student and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. Upon graduation Hoffman became a full-time student on full scholarship, and it was then, at the age of nineteen that he had his first solo show at Grace Horne Galleries in Boston. That exhibition was a huge success and the young artist was referred to as "a prodigy in portraiture" by the press. In 1924 Hoffman received the most prestigious award given by the Boston Museum School, the Paige Traveling Scholarship. The scholarship allowed him to travel abroad, studying and painting all across Europe. The city was his base from which to work, but his love for new experiences caused him to often tag along with his brothers. Hoffman's brothers owned a mining company and prospected in the southwest, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The artist in Hoffman was heavily influenced by the people of the small villages that he visited while with his brothers' mining company. Studied Boston Museum of Fine Arts School with Philip Hale Abroad in Europe

In 1923 Chiu moved briefly to Paris, enrolling briefly at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before transferring to the University of London in 1924. He won a scholarship to the Royal Academy in 1926 and from 1929 worked with Laurance Binyon at the British Museum to catalogue their Chinese painting collection. 1929 also saw his first solo exhibition at London’s Claridge Gallery which was honoured by an official appearance from Her Majesty Queen Mary, with all the paintings sold out within a few days of the Royal visit. In 1930 he held a solo exhibition in Beijing with a further exhibition in Shanghai in 1933. In 1938 he returned to America holding a solo exhibition at Knoedler’s Gallery in 1942. His unusual path through East and West result in a unique style and his journey is perhaps best summed up in his own words: As I go forward I realize increasingly that it is not a matter of East or West, some day there will be Art from a New World Civilization, the creation of which, as a painter, I wish to contribute to. Art is a universal language that speaks to every human heart. (Extract from Teng Chiu, "A Chinese Painter's Exhibition in Europe," Monitor, (August 1928), Museum School Library, Boston.)
