    • Willem Pieter Hoevenaar,  Dutch 1808-1863-  Minding the baby;  oil on pan
      Jul. 09, 2024

Willem Pieter Hoevenaar,  Dutch 1808-1863-  Minding the baby;  oil on pan

      Est: £800 - £1,200

Willem Pieter Hoevenaar,  Dutch 1808-1863-  Minding the baby;  oil on panel, signed and dated 'W.P. Hoevenaars. / 1856' (lower right), 49 x 39.8 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Willem Pieter Hoevenaar trained under Christiaan van Geelen (1794-1826) and Pieter Christoffel Wonder (1777-1852), and was part of a family of artists, which included his brother Cornelis Willem Hoevenaar (1802-1873), his cousin, also called Cornelis Willem Hoevenaar (1847-1884), and his son Jozef Hoevenaar (1840-1926).  The present work is a typical example of the artist's approach, which is clearly heavily indebted to the work of Dutch genre painters of the 17th century, such as Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667) and Nicolaes Maes (1634-1693). Indeed, Hoevenaar's admiration for Dutch 'Golden Age' painters is explicitly expressed in his painting of 1842 depicting 'Jan Steen and Frans van Mieris in an Inn', now held in the collection of the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
