          Trew Hocker (1913 - 1963, Missouri, New York) An untitled portrait, circa 1935 Signed lower right Thick paper mounted to Masonite by the artist in the period. Board measures approximately 30 x 25 inches, the frame 35 x 30 inches. Displayed in a frame made by the artist. Provenance: found in long-term storage within a mid-Missouri home around 1990 along with a second work dated 1935. Trew Hocker left Missouri at the beginning of World War II, settling in New York after the war. He was a muralist and student of Thomas Hart Benton.

          Trew Hocker (Missouri; 1913 - 1963) American WPA Genre Landscape with Steam Engine and Automobile oil on canvas signed lower left. The following information is from Janet Wilzbach, Museum Collections Trew Hocker was born in Sedalia, MO, on June 17, 1913. He studied at the University of Missouri, Kansas City Art Institute, and the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. He also studied under Thomas Hart Benton. Hocker painted murals for the New York World's Fair and the San Francisco Exposition. He was a District Supervisor of WPA Art Program and later developed graphic training aids for the AAF in World War II. In the 1950s, Hocker designed sets for television and stage, including the 1950s series, Ellery Queen, starring Richard Hart. He also painted mural decorations for stores, restaurants, and colleges. He settled in New York City in 1947. His death date is unknown. 30" x 40"
