Meindert Hobbema, Wooded River Landscape with Figures on a Path

      Est: €150,000 - €200,000

Signed and dated lower left: MH F/1659 Little is known about the Amsterdam painter's early creative period. This makes the present river landscape, dated 1659, all the more important as a milestone on Hobbema's path to becoming the most important Dutch landscape painter of the 17th century, alongside Jacob van Ruisdael. The impressive depiction of a Dutch dune landscape, monumental in its composition, was painted shortly before Jacob van Ruisdael testified in 1660 that Hobbema had "served and learnt with him for several years". Interestingly, Ruisdael's influence on Hobbema's work only became more apparent around 1662, and only for a short time, as Wolfgang Stechow has already noted (Dutch Landscape Painting of the Seventeenth Century, London, 1968, p. 60). From 1657 to 1661, Hobbema painted in the tradition of earlier masters such as Salomon van Ruysdael and Cornelis Vroom. The feathery foliage of the trees in a river landscape from 1658 (Detroit Institute of Art), for example, is still strongly reminiscent of works by Cornelis Vroom. The influence of Jacob van Ruisdael is noticeable in the present work. This can be seen in the composition of the picture, which is characterised by a diagonal path running between majestic trees and a grove; also in pictorial elements such as the pond and its vegetation in the foreground, the lighting, which artfully distributes shimmers of sunlight and accentuates the silhouettes of the tree trunks. This painting can be compared, for example, with Ruisdael's "Edge of a Forest with a Grainfield" from 1655 in the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth. In the painting "Wooded River Landscape with Figures on a Path", Hobbema presents himself as an independent artist whose style differs from that of his teacher. Hobbema's view of nature is brighter, more colourful and livelier. His compositions are more expansive and gain greater freedom, his style is more fluid. Unlike Ruisdael's melancholic and sometimes dramatic compositions, Hobbema's works show a gentler aspect of the Dutch landscape. In the present painting, the flowing light conveys the peace and tranquillity of a sunny afternoon in a Dutch landscape and opens up the row of trees to the view of a meadow and the sun-drenched dunes beyond. The wandering figures on the country road are also typical of Hobbema's work. Some bold red accents in the figures' clothing create a striking effect. In 1668, the 30-year-old Hobbema took on the position of official wine measurer for the city of Amsterdam and oversaw deliveries to and within the city. This position provided him with a regular and ample income, something that many painters of the Golden Age lacked. Painting was no longer at the centre of his activities. Nevertheless, he created further masterpieces in the following years. Hobbema's paintings are rare on the market. Most of his works can be found in private collections. Almost every major museum has a Hobbema on display, from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the National Gallery in London, the Musée du Louvre in Paris to the Hermitage in St Petersburg.

      Est: €3,000 - €5,000

Meindert Hobbema (attributed to) (Amsterdam 1638-Amsterdam 1709) The large oaks oil on canvas 57x71 cm - with frame 90x105 cm Meindert Hobbema's majestic landscapes were particularly appreciated and taken as a model by French and particularly English painters in the eighteenth century. Furthermore, unlike his Dutch contemporaries, Hobbema placed not the city, with its majestic architecture, but the rural landscape that he could see at the center of his art. It is therefore not surprising that John Constable deeply loved his way of representing nature, with its trees with lush foliage, the small streams overlooked by curious fishermen and old abandoned farmhouses, drawing great inspiration from them. Apr. 13, 2024

Meindert Hobbema or After “The Old Water Mill” Dutch Old Master Oil on Cradled Panel Painting

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Title: Meindert Hobbema or After “The Old Water Mill” Dutch Old Master Oil on Cradled Panel Painting Description: Titled “The Old Water Mill” by or after the renowned Dutch artist Meindert Hobbema. A Dutch Golden Age painter known for his landscapes, Hobbema derived his specialty during his time as the star pupil of the era’s pre-eminent landscape and woodland painter Jacob van Ruisdael. Hobbema himself went on to greatly influence other world-renowned artists, most notably John Constable who himself led his own revolution of the landscape painting genre, and who also composed many –and some of the most famous- depictions of water mills and Hobbema-esque landscapes. Approximately six years ago the estate from which this painting hails was given a verbal estimate, pending inspection, by Sotheby’s in the $600,000-$900,000 range; however when their department was re-contacted upon removal of the work from the estate, the representative informed the estate the work was still under research as to whether by the master’s hand. When a second effort was made to inquire as to the authentication, Sotheby’s said the status of their research was unchanged. We give this work a strong attribution. Type of Piece: Oil on Cradled Panel Painting. Measurements: 46 x 59 inches. Condition: Visible paint lost and horizontal repair on cradled panel. Hallmarks: The Old Water Mill Meindert Hobbena [sic] 1638-1709. Placard was added later, please not the misspelling of the last name. Provenance: From the estate of U.S. Marine and 1952 Helsinki Olympian Jaime Annexy Fajardo of Puerto Rico and his wife Pan-American games tennis star MariaAnnexy. The Annexy’s both inherited many fine antiques and were themselves avid collectors in the Continental taste, settling in an expensive landmark home overlooking Spring Bayou in Tarpon Spring, FL, the site of the famous, annual Greek Orthodox Epiphany Cross-Diving festival. Estimated weight of piece: Approximately 45 lbs. Described By: Sam CNX 1537 7839

      Meindert Hobbema, Nachfolge Oak forest

      Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Meindert Hobbema, Nachfolge 1638 Amsterdam - 1709 ebenda Oak forest Inscribed lower right. Oil auf panel. 72 x 105 cm. Cradling, restored, damaged. Minor damage to frame (94 x 126 cm).

      MEINDERT HOBBEMA (attr. a)

      Est: €1,000 - €2,000

      Meindert Hobbema Oak forest

      Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Meindert Hobbema 1638 Amsterdam - 1709 ebenda Oak forest Signed lower right. Oil auf panel. 72 x 105 cm. Cradling, restored, damaged. Minor damage to frame (94 x 126 cm).

71 x 82 cm. A.R. Provenienz: Verso Aufkleber: Kunsthandlung B. The Avenue at Middelharnis After Meindert Hobbema oil on canvas Landscape Painting. The frame measures 28" x 32". sight 22" x 26". WIKIPEDIA INFO-Meindert Hobbema (Bapt. October 31, 1638 – December 7, 1709), was a Dutch Golden Age painter of landscapes, specializing in views of woodland, although his most famous painting, The Avenue at Middelharnis (1689, National Gallery, London), shows a different type of scene.Wooded Landscape with Farmsteads, c. 1665, Mauritshuis, The HagueHobbema was a pupil of Jacob van Ruisdael, the pre-eminent landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, and in his mature period produced paintings developing one aspect of his master's more varied output, specializing in "sunny forest scenes opened by roads and glistening ponds, fairly flat landscapes with scattered tree groups, and watermills", including over 30 of the last in paintings.[1]Forest landscape with a merry company in a cart, Rijksmuseum, c. 1665.The majority of his mature works come from the 1660s; after he married and took a job as an exciseman in 1668 he painted less, and after 1689 apparently not at all. He was not very well known in his lifetime or for nearly a century after his death but became steadily more popular from the last decades of the 18th century until the 20th century.
