Khay Beng Ho Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1934 - d. 1986

Ho Khay Beng was born in 1934. He graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore in 1959 and went on study art at Rome Academy of Fine Arts, Italy, in 1968.
He held one-man shows at Chin Kang Association, Penang (1965), Galleria Guilla Flavia, Rome (1966), Galleria Michelangelo, Rome (1967) and Galleria D'arte I Volshi, Rome (1967).
He participated in the Singapore Local Artists Exhibitions and Nanyang Academy 20th Anniversary Exhibitions (1957-1958). He took part in the Penang Art Society annual exhibitions (1959-1984), National Art Gallery annual invitational exhibitions (1959-1965). In 1962, he was on the Malaysian Art Exhibition touring India. He was invited to Roman Art Gallery's invitation exhibition in 1967. Other than Malaysia, his works had been exhibited in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, India, Spain, Switzerland, France, Italy and United States.
Between 1965 to 1968, Khay Beng was awarded six gold and silver medals at National and International Art competitions in Italy. In 1968, he was honoured with the 'outstanding young man' award, Formosa.
He was the Vice-President of the Penang Art Society between 1970 and 1975 and member of the Nanyang Academy Association of Malaysia and the Nanyang Academy Alumni Association of Singapore.
His untimely death at the age of 53 years in 1986 robbed Penang of one of her finest oil painters.

        Depicted in the scene is a kampung house painted with sepia hues. Sepia tends to make everything look sentimental and nostalgic. The house that was set amidst the woods allowed us to feel home and peace. Inspired to take up art by art pioneer Kuo Juping, Khay Beng took up additional courses in mosaics and sculpture when in Rome, where he had solos at the Galleria Guilla Flavia (1966), Galleria Michelangelo (1967) and Galeria D’ ArteVolschi (1967), and was also featured in an exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Rome in 1967. He was also awarded six gold and silver medals in competitions. Others who followed his Italian art education were Aza Osman and H.H. Lim. Ho Khay Beng taught art at Han Chiang High School in Penang. He was awarded the Overseas Chinese Arts Association Prize in 1968. In 1996, he was paid tribute via a Memorial exhibition held at The Art Gallery Penang.

        The Nine Emperors Gods Festival is a nine-day Taoist celebration beginning on the eve of 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The eponymous “Nine Emperors” (九皇大帝, Jiu Huang Da Di) are the nine sons manifested Father Emperor Zhou Yu Dou Fu Yuan Jun and Mother of the Big Dipper Dou Mu Yuan Jun. They are formed by the seven stars of the Big Dipper of the North Ursa Major and two assistant stars. Trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore (1956-1958) and the Rome Academy of Fine Arts in 1965-1968, Ho Khay Beng is an artist noted for his half-body portraits, having done portraits of dignitaries such as Malaysia’s founding father and first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman; former prime minister Tun Dr. Mahathir and his wife, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah; Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang; and China artist Qi Baishi (1864-1975).         "One is almost transported to the scene of the Chinese temple depicted in this painting. The multi- layered colour and texture brings out an almost three-dimensional quality to the work, which Ho Khay Beng managed to breathe life into. Known for his simplicity in landscapes and signature style of layering and texturing, this piece is full of character. Ho Khay Beng was born in 1933. He graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore in 1959 and went on study art at Rome Academy of Fine Arts, Italy, in 1968. He held one-man shows at Chin Kang Association, Penang (1965), Galleria Guilla Flavia, Rome (1966), Galleria Michelangelo, Rome (1967) and Galleria Dêarte I Volshi, Rome (1967).         There is no record who the 'Chinese Lady' in Ho Khay Beng's portrait is, but from the demeanour, it can be gleaned from her clean white blouse and facial features and her neatly trimmed hair, that she was a simple and quiet person who liked to keep her home clean and orderly.         This painting depicts with expressionistic brushwork the celebration of Thaipusam, an important Hindu festival. The solid composition of broad sweeps and rich colours create vibrancy, complemented with the placement of kavadi bearing figures forming diagonal lines that enhances the rhythm of movement.   Ho Khay Beng received his education at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore (1958), and furthered his studies at Rome Academy of Fine Arts, Italy. His solo exhibitions were exhibited locally and abroad, which include Chin Kang Association, Penang (1965), Galleria Guilla Flavia, Rome, Italy (1966), Galleria Michaelangelo, Rome, Italy (1967), Galleria D’arte Volschi, Rome, Italy (1968) and Memorial Exhibition, The Art Gallery, Penang (1996).
