Col. woodcut ôban, signed Utamaro hitsu, publisher Tsuruya Kiemon. - Portion of upper left corner restored and of lower right corner strengthened; (sl.) cut short in upper and lower margin; sl. soiled and partly very vaguely foxed. = Number 1 from the series Joshoku kaiko tewaza-gusa (Women Engaged in the Sericulture Industry), 1798-1800. This print is usually seen with text in the cloud-shaped border at the top of the print, whereas our copy is without. Asano/ Clark 325 (not mentioning a version without text) AND 2 others by the same, both 20th cent. restrikes but nice scenes, one being no.9 from the series Joshoku kaiko tewaza-gusa showing three bijin engaged in calligraphy, the other showing three bijin engaged in calligraphy (the first yellowed, the second sold w.a.f.).

    SIX WOODBLOCK PRINTS Early 19 c. Two rare horizontal landscape scenes, signed "Utamaro Hitsu" (1753 - 1806). Three small unsigned Hokusai, multi-image and subjects. Original signed "Hiroshige ga" published 1843-1847. Fudo Temple in Meguro, c. 1840's. Lovely view of the sacred Fudo Temple at Meguro, with the large entrance gate in the center. Visitors stroll about the grounds and climb the stairs up the steep hill at right, tall trees dotting the hill. At left, pilgrims bathe in the pool, with streams of water spouting from sculptured dragon's heads atop the stone walls. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has a similar edition in its permanent collection. An attractive design capturing the secluded natural setting, a respite from the busy city. 10" H x 15" W including margins. The other unsigned characteristic of Hiroshige's work.
