    (1861 Peckham Rye/Surrey - 1942 Midhurst/West Sussex) Der Herbst Als Personifikation des Herbsts sitzt der junge weibliche Akt, spärlich bedeckt durch ein leichtes Tuch über den Beinen und einem Pflanzenbouquet in den Händen, auf einem Felsen in herbstlich gefärbter Waldlandschaft. Feinmalerisches Werk Hitchens, der die South Kensington School of Art besuchte, anschließend seine Studien an der Académie Julian in Paris und in Rom vervollständigte und sich auf Reisen in Italien und Süddeutschland weiterbildete. Bereits im Alter von 21 Jahren wurde Hitchens mit seiner ersten Goldmedaille ausgezeichnet und stellte nach 1887 regelmäßig in der Royal Academy aus. Seine Arbeiten, deren Themen von klassischer Mythologie über den Naturalismus der Schule von Bastien-Lepage bis hin zu Portraitaufträgen reichten, entsprachen dem akademischen Zeitgeist und fanden hohe Anerkennung in damaligen Kreisen. Sowohl sein Sohn Ivon als auch sein Enkelsohn John Hitchens folgten seinem Beruf als Maler. Öl/Lwd.; L. u. sign.; Ca. 41 cm x 25,5 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas. Signed.
