Derek Hirst, British 1930-2006- Interior with chairs; graphite on squared with coloured crayon and chalk, signed and dated 1967/8, 48x38.5cm, (may be subject to Droit de Suite) Provenance: From the art collection at the former St Gabriel's College, Camberwell. St Gabriel's was a Church of England teacher training college, founded in 1899 and closed in 1978. Its Art Department attracted talented teachers and artists whose vocation was to inspire young teachers through studying and imitating the work of great artists. The paintings and drawings in this collection were collected by the College's staff through donations and purchases during the interwar and post-war periods. After the College's closure, the collection was transferred to the ownership of an educational trust and until recently loaned to Goldsmith's University of London.

§ Derek Hirst (British, 20th Century) - Paradox No. V, 1975 - signed lower right "Derek Hirst" and numbered 16/35

    Est: £70 - £100

§ Derek Hirst, RCA (British, 1930-2006) Paradox No. V, 1975 signed lower right "Derek Hirst" and numbered 16/35 lithograph h:58 w: 62 cm Provenance: In the 1960s, many local education authorities built up large art collections which were then lent to schools, either paintings or sculpture to show in the school grounds. Leicestershire built up a particularly large collection of artworks, as the former Director of Education Stewart C Mason was a particularly keen advocate of placing original works of art in schools. In a book edited by Stewart C Mason, "Our Experience: the changing schools of Leicestershire", written in 1970, a former headteacher and warden from Ivanhoe School and Community College (the former name of Ivanhoe College), S C Western, writes about having original works of art on display in the school, stating that "there are throughout the building original works of art - paintings, sculpture, tapestries - many by artists of repute. In the adult common room, for example, at present there will be found paintings by Sydney Nolan and Gillian Ayres; children on their way to class are watched by the haunting eyes of 'the Parisian Waif' by Jack Hughes". Whilst many of these works have been returned to the County collection, those owned by the college are now presented for sale as they are no longer displayed. Funds raised from the sale will be used to reinvest in improving student facilities throughout the school. Derek Hirst was born in Doncaster, where, at 16, he went to art school with the firm intention of becoming an artist. Despite teaching mostly focused on "craft skills", he gained admission to the Royal College of Art painting school in 1948, aged 18.
