Damien Hirst Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1965 -

Best-known for his unusual installations and over-the-top style, British artist Damien Hirst has been exhibiting his works since the late 1980s. Damien Hirst's artwork ranges from a formaldehyde-preserved shark —entitled The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living – to a platinum cast of a human skull set with diamonds. Conversely, collectors also seek out Damien Hirst's prints of simple yet brilliant butterflies and prints of vivid dots and shapes.

As an art collector himself, he knows what appeals to buyers, so prices for Damien Hirst's art often range up to the millions. The 2017 exhibition of Damien Hirst's artwork called Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable garnered unfavorable reviews from the critics, but at the time of opening, art collectors had bought around 70 percent of the items. They’re extreme - there’s something almost tacky about them. Like Jackson Pollock twisted by love. They’re decorative but taken from nature. They’re about desire and how we process the things around us and what we turn them into, but also about the insane visual transience of beauty - a tree in full crazy blossom against a clear sky. It’s been so good to make them, to be completely lost in colour and in paint in my studio. They’re garish and messy and fragile and about me moving away from Minimalism and the idea of an imaginary mechanical painter and that’s so exciting for me.” - Damien Hirst * Condition report available upon request
