One housed in a modern frame, the other in period gilt frame. Circa 1880. 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" sight, 14" x 16" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Ohio, Henry Livingston Hillyer (1840-1886) spent most of his short life on the East Coast. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design regularly and at the Centennial Exposition of 1876, but little is know of his life and work. He is documented working as far afield as Florida in 1881 and in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he died in 1886.

Housed in a modern frame. Circa 1870. 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" sight, 14" x 16" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Ohio, Henry Livingston Hillyer (1840-1886) spent most of his short life on the East Coast.     oil on board, monogrammed and dated 1877 at lower left, presented in a later gilt composition frame with silk liner. SS 6 x 9.25 in.; DOA 10.75 x 14 in. Born in Ohio, Henry Hillyer eventually settled in Washington, D.C. with his family. He was particularly found of the Rock Creek Valley, which he described as "Each visit has increased my love for its beauties, and my convictions that it was designed by the Creator for the rest and refreshment of this nation's official slaves." Estate of the artist Fletcher Copenhagen Fine Art, Fredericksburg, VA Private Collection, Richmond, VA
