    ELEFANT Höhe: 37,6 cm. Breite: 18 cm. Länge: 42,5 cm. Auf Plinthe signiert „G. Hierholtz“, Gießereistempel und mit „Susse Frères Éditeurs Paris“ versehen sowie „6“ nummeriert. Bronzeguss, braun patiniert. Auf einer kleinen, naturalistisch gestalteten Plinthe steht ein mächtiger Elefant, der seinen Rüssel um eine große Pflanze geschlungen hat. Er ist im Begriff, diese zu heben und stemmt sich mit Kraft gegen den Boden. Die detailreiche Darstellung der vollplastischen Figur zeigt die typische Haut mit unzähligen Falten übersät. Der Elefant konzentriert sich auf sein Tun und drückt eine Ruhe und Gelassenheit gepaart mit Kraft und Stärke aus. Hierholtz schuf Skulpturen, die das Gemüt und die Eigenart eines Tieres auf einzigartige Weise darstellten und so die gezeigten Tiere auf anschauliche Weise charakterisierten. Hierholtz " Porte la marque du fondeur " Susse Frs Edts Paris " et la mention " cire perdue " H. 37 x L. 42 x P. 17,5 cm Gustav Hierholtz, d’origine Suisse mais de parents alsaciens, fait ses études à l’École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs de Paris. Il devient praticien d’Auguste Rodin avant de devenir pensionnaire à la villa Abd-El-Tif en 1912. Mobilisé pour partir en Indochine en 1915, il est blessé et rapatrié en France. Marqué par son expérience en Indochine, il y retourne en 1919 et y dirige l’École des Arts Appliqués jusqu’en 1930. En plus d’importantes commandes publiques, il se consacre à l’art animalier pour lequel il obtient succès et récompenses. Le Musée du Quai Branly à Paris conserve plusieurs de ses œuvres.
