George Elgar Hicks, RBA,  British 1824-1914-  Utilising Church metal;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'G.E. Hicks. 1868.' (lower right), 45.7 x 61.1 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 5 June 1991, lot 164.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Hicks was best known for his genre scenes, which were heavily influenced by the works of William Powell Frith (1819-1909). Hicks's paintings are typically imbued with an idealised, somewhat sentimental, atmosphere, often with a strong moralising tone, like contemporaries such as Frith and Augustus Egg (1816-1863). In the present work, Hicks has depicted a historical scene, with figures in 17th-century clothing, who appear to be Puritans from the Civil War era, ripping up the metal which marks a memorial on the floor, whilst a figure hidden in the darkness furtively slips out of a door to the left of the scene.

GEORGE ELGAR HICKS (England, 1824 - 1914). "Portrait of a Lady, 1981. Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. It has restorations. It has a very deteriorated frame. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 92 x 71 cm; 107 x 87 cm (frame). George Elgar Hicks was an English painter, active during the Victorian period, who achieved great fame thanks to his large genre paintings, which emulate the style of William Powell Frith, but also for his work as a portraitist of high society. Born on 13 March 1824 in Lymington, Hampshire, George Elgar Hicks was the second son of a wealthy magistrate. His parents encouraged Hicks to become a doctor, so Hicks studied medicine at University College from 1840 to 1842. However, after three years, Hicks decided that he wanted to be an artist. Due to these circumstances, Hicks began his career much later than most artists of the time. In 1843, Hicks attended the Sass Academy and by 1844 he had entered the Royal Academy Schools. In 1859, Hicks painted his first major genre painting, Dividend Day at the Bank of England, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1859, following the success of Frith Ramsgate's Sands and The Derby Day paintings at the Royal Academy. It was a typical genre painting, showing a Bank of England scene and presenting a wide range of social classes. He painted several larger paintings of modern life in the following years, which were generally poorly reviewed by critics. By the late 1860s, the popularity of genre painting had waned and Hicks began to focus on historical subjects, leading to society portraiture in the 1870s.
