Born in Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the orphaned Hicks was apprenticed to local coachmakers William and Henry Tomlinson where he learned the art of ornamental painting. By 1803 he had married Sarah Worstall of Newtown, Pennsylvania. Hicks is best-known for his Peaceable Kingdom painting, of which he painted various versions. Today there are 62 versions currently known.

This one was probably the father-in-law of his friend Richard Price. That it was the final resting place of his great here, Penn, increased its appeal. The bull's darkening coat may reflect the painter's sense of his own approaching death" (Mather, pp. 184-186).
