Provenance: Swiss private collection. Our thanks to Dr. Georg Lechner for confirming the authenticity of this work on the basis of a photograph. --------------- ANTON HICKEL (Böhmisch Leipa 1745–1798 Hamburg) Bildnis der Caroline Pichler und ihres Bruders. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten mittig signiert und schwer leserlich datiert: A. Hickel 177(...). 94,5 × 84,8 cm. Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz. Das äusserst qualitätsvolle Porträt der österreichischen Schriftstellerin Caroline Pichler (1769–1843) und ihres Bruders zeugt von hoher Präzision und ist in Anton Hickels frühere Schaffensphase zu datieren. Schon bald danach sollte der Künstler, der an der Kunstakademie in Wien studiert hatte, durch Europa reisen, was seinen Stil nachhaltig beeinflusste. 1786 wurde Hickel zum Hofmaler Kaiser Josephs II. von Österreich. Über die österreichischen und deutschen Grenzen hinaus, etablierte er sich auch in der Schweiz als Porträtist des gehobenen Bürgertums, insbesondere in Basel und Bern. Hickel, of the late Rt Honble Sir John Scott, Earl of/Eldon, who died Janry 13th 1838 in the 87th year of his age, having been for nearly twenty-five years/Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. This picture belonged to him, and becoming under his will at his/decease the property of his daughter Lady Elizabeth Repton was by her given to me./Eldon. 1840.'
