Size: 11.25'' x 8'', 29 x 20 cm (sight); 19'' x 15.5'', 48 x 39 cm (frame). Provenance: George Witus; Collection of Dr. Christine I. Oaklander. Hetzel was founder of the Scalp Level group of artists, so named because of the rural town outside of Johnstown, PA, that Pittsburgh artists went to paint during the summer. Hetzel was known as primary a landscape painter influenced by the Hudson River School but his still lifes, usually on a table top with a melon, grapes, and peaches, are more rare and highly sought after.

    George Hetzel (American, 1826-1899), Landscape with River oil on canvas laid on panel, signed and dated 186(?) at lower left, presented in a period appropriate gilt frame. Panel 23 3/4 x 36 in.; Frame dimensions 32 x 43 in. George Hetzel was born in France, but immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of two. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and apprenticed with a local sign and house painter. His talents earned him work painting interior murals for riverboat public rooms, local taverns and church frescoes. In 1847, Hetzel traveled to Germany to formally study at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Upon his return to Pennsylvania in 1849, he earned a living as a portrait painter, but landscapes were his passion. Drawing upon the tradition of the French Barbizon school, Hetzel founded the Scalp Level School of artists. Hetzel exhibited widely during his lifetime, showing works at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876, National Academy in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago and the Carnegie Institute's first International exhibition in 1896. Stretcher size 14 x 10 in.; Frame dimensions 20 x 16 in. George Hetzel was born in France, but moved with his family to the United States at the age of two. After a brief stay in Baltimore, Maryland, the Hetzel family settled a small farm just outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Hetzel apprenticed to a house and sign painter in Pittsburgh. After his four year training, he began painting interior murals on riverboats and in local cafes and saloons. In 1847, he left Pennsylvania to pursue formal studies at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. Hetzel returned to Pittsburgh in 1849 and found solace and inspiration in the heavily wooded American landscape. In addition to his own painting, he also was an instructor at the Pittsburgh School of Design for Women. Hetzel is credited as the founder of the Scalp Level School of artists. Hetzel exhibited frequently throughout his lifetime, showing works at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
