        Edwin Bower Hesser, Constance Talmadge. Seven semi-glossy gelatin silver prints. Four are about 14 x 11 inches, three 10 x 8 inches. Vintage early 1920’s. Hesser (1893 – 1962) had an extremely interesting and varied career. I recommend an extensive article “Edwin Bower Hesser’s Strange Art Journey” by David S. Shields that can be found on the Internet. His role as a Hollywood photographer began when he moved from New York to Hollywood struck by the example of Alfred Cheney Johnson’s work that had started to be published in 1917. A lot of his work was under the influence of ACJ. Some of these photographs show the more animated side of Constance that was very much a part of her role in INTOLERANCE. This was different from her sister Norma, who was much more serious. Here is a link to a PDF that makes it easy to browse the offerings.

Printed by the photographer Edwin Bower Hesser for approval for publicity by Mary Pickford. Approved on the verso in pencil by Mary Pickford, “OK, MP”. The matte print features deckled edges. With minor silvering. In overall, vintage very good to fine condition. $200 - $300

Gelatin silver glossy double-weight 8 x 10 in. file prints of Jean Harlow for nude sitting in Griffith Park by Edwin Bower Hesser; signed by Harlow, “Jean Harlow” and written in an unknown hand “ ΔNINON DELYS name she used” in pencil on verso (c. 1929). Print was made for Harlow as a “proof” which she returned to Hesser with her instructions, resulting in set of deckled-edge matte 7 x 9 in. custom prints for her: both the proof set and custom set likely unique. Very good; with emulsion loss and soiling.
