Benjamin Herring (1806-1830) - 'Lottery', winner of the Doncaster Cup - oil on canvas

      Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Benjamin Herring, Sen. (British, 1806-1830) Lottery, a Dark Bay Racehorse, Winner of the Doncaster Cup, 1825 oil on canvas h:57 w: 74 cm Provenance: Christie's, London sale, 3 March 1950, Lot 74. Other Notes: Lottery was the winner of the Doncaster Cup in 1825, at which time the race was 2 miles and 5 furlongs in length. He beat the good horse Longwaist by a neck and nine others, leading all the way, and in total he won 11 races. Of the Darley Arabian sire line, branch of Eclipse, Lottery was sired by Tramp, a top four-mile racehorse and extremely successful sire. His dam, Mundane, despite having a sire and broodmare sire among the top stallions of the day (Young Camilla - daughter of Woodpecker - and Pot-8-0s) was actually a dud on the racecourse, but Lottery was not, although he was not able to fulfill his potential as a top racehorse. A brown-bay colt born in 1820, he was an attractive, 16 hand tall horse, but suffered form a nervous temperament, which was aggravated by mistreatment and relentless training. He was bred and owned by Richard Watt on the Yorkshire Bishop Burton stud farm where he apparently showed undesirable behaviours; Watt is reputed to have considered having him shot as he was "so apprehensive of serious mischief". His jockey John Jackson said the horse "would not make any effort to run" and "showed very bad temper", and Watt sold the colt for 450 guineas to Thomas Whitaker of Downthorpe Hall near Ellerby in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Here again his uncertain temperament was exacerbated by being "miserably treated and mismanaged", serving mares and made to engage in long courses with some of the best horses of the time when only half trained. However, when he could run successfully, he was outstanding. He showed splendid exhibitions of courage and speed, and some considered him the "horse of the century". Nonetheless, as a contemporary turf observer wrote, "Never was a horse so shamefully messed about as was Lottery. Naturally erratic and queer in his disposition, his defects were sadly aggravated by neglect and mismanagement; otherwise he would have been one of the most brilliant performers on the British Turf." Lottery spent 7 years plus at stud in the north of England before being sold to France. He sired one English classic winner, St. Leger winner Chorister, and no less than 8 winners of the Grand National steeplechase at Aintree descended from Lottery within 6 generations. Benjamin Herring (1830 - 1871) was the son of John Frederick Herring Sr,.a highly successful and prolific artist who ranks alongside Sir Edwin Landseer as one of the more eminent animal painters of the mid-nineteenth century. His paintings were very popular and his talent was recognised by wealthy customers, leading him to paint hunters and racehorses for the gentry. Benjamin Herring was the youngest of his six siblings - his brothers were also artists and his sisters married painters. The Herring family played quite a significant role in the English art of the nineteenth century and provided many of the most memorable paintings of sporting, coaching and rural scenes in British art. Benjamin received all of his training from his father and likewise concentrated most of his efforts on horse and sporting paintings. Benjamin died at the relatively young age of 41 after producing only a small body of work and it is widely believed that his finest paintings were produced towards the end of his career. During his short career he exhibited a few works at both the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institution.
