Original vintage London Transport travel poster for Chaldon Church featuring artwork by Frederick Charles Herrick (1887-1970) showing visitors on a day trip from London in the historic church in Surrey looking up at the historic 12th century doom mural that was uncovered during restoration work in 1870-1871, a rare religious wall painting depicting the Ladder of Salvation of the Human Soul with Purgatory and Hell divided by a decorative band and ladder in the centre, surrounded by figures of people in Heaven and Hell with demons / devils and the Archangel Michael / Saint Michael, winged angels and fire flames, cauldrons and a serpent snake, scenes of the seven Deadly Sins and the Last Judgement with Christ in a nimbus cloud at the top, with church pews in front of the wall and the architectural beams above, set within a decorative frame border with the bold stylised title lettering below. Printed by Sanders Phillips and Co Ltd, The Baynard Press. Good condition, restored paper losses, restored tears, staining, backed on linen. In addition to heading the Baynard Press in London, Herrick designed posters for a variety of clients, including the London Underground, the Empire Marketing Board, RMSP (Royal Mail Steamship Packet), the Royal Mail Line and the Anchor Line. In this brightly-colored vista of the Norwegian fjords, the appealing geometrically-rendered repetition of Art Deco patterns is very apparent - as the water, the mountains and even the leaves on the tree all appear to vibrate with the design.

Almost all of Herrick's posters are marked by an elegant Art Deco stylization, and indeed he was the only British artist to participate in the famed 1925 Parisian Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. In addition to heading the Baynard Press in London, Herrick designed posters for a variety of clients, including the London Underground, the Empire Marketing Board, RMSP (Royal Mail Steamship Packet), the Royal Mail Line and the Anchor Line. Herrick designed several masterful Art Deco images for the RMSP company, which became the world's largest shipping line in 1927 when it bought the White Star Line. They were later dissolved on account of financial improprieties in 1931, and reestablished as the Royal Mail Line in 1932. This is one of Herrick's rarest posters - we have found only one other copy at auction in the last 30 years. Richmond p. 206.

The train from King's Cross Station in London to Scotland was one of the LNER's most successful and well advertised routes. Advertisements for the line typically depicted travel destinations or the bridges and trains operating the route, however this image departs from that motif. Herrick utilizes the image of a gigantic steed pulling the train along the tracks to personify the strength of the steam engine as it travels past a salutatory Poseidon off the coast. Herrick is best known for his popular London Underground advertisements, and it is possible that his design for a series of posters depicting Roman deities in 1921 for the company may have prompted his LNER commission for this rare depiction of a railway. The strong lines and bright colors typical of Herrick's style create a dynamic and compelling scene, pairing the mythological might of Poseidon with the industrial prowess of the steam engine. rare/span.
