Attributed to FRANCISCO HERRERA "EL VIEJO" (Seville, around 1590 - Madrid, around 1654). "Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus". Oil on canvas. Relined. It presents craquelures and slight damages in the frame. Measurements: 85 x 62,5 cm; 95 x 73,5 cm (frame). At the beginning of the 17th century the representation of St. Joseph with the Child became popular, having been until then the paternal figure relegated to second place with respect to the Virgin. Francisco Herrera El Viejo, to whom the present painting is attributed, dealt with this theme on more than one occasion. This is a fine work. The small body of Jesus has been modelled with subtle shifts of light that envelop him in a supernatural aura without the need to introduce orthodox iconography. On the contrary, what is reinforced is the supreme moment of union between father and son. Both squint their eyelids, inviting us to share their silence. The expressive contrast of light, the quality of the foreshortening of the small body, the velvety shades that chisel out Joseph's atheistic features and the marble flesh tones of Jesus are reminiscent of other works by the artist. A Spanish painter and engraver of the early Baroque period, Francisco de Herrera the Elder is one of the artists most representative of the evolution of Sevillian painting in the first half of the 17th century, from the gradual introduction of the new naturalist aesthetic, with the consequent abandonment of an already outdated mannerism, to the definitive arrival of the freer, looser and more dynamic forms characteristic of the full Baroque period. The painter's definitive move to Madrid in 1650 is also indicative of the general crisis in Seville at that time. He was the son of Juan de Herrera y Aguilar, an illuminating painter and engraver whose work was continued by Juan Herrera, Francisco's brother, and the latter's own son, Francisco Herrera el Mozo. He must have received his early training in his father's workshop, although some early sources cite him as a pupil of Francisco Pacheco. Francisco de Herrera's first known work dates from 1609 and is the composition of an engraved title page. Ten years later a lawsuit was brought against him to require him to take the guild exam, which he had failed despite having worked as an independent painter for several years, and in 1616 he even contracted an important series of paintings for the convent of San Francisco. However, from the 1620s onwards Herrera became one of the most highly esteemed and praised masters in Seville and received important commissions both in the city and abroad. He also practised both oil and fresco painting, as evidenced by the decoration of the church of San Buenaventura in Seville, executed between 1626 and 1628. With regard to his language, in his early years Herrera was indebted to his father's style, particularly in his preoccupation with drawing. We also see in his youthful period an important imprint of Pacheco's tardomanierism. In his mature years the most profound influence on his work would be that of Juan de Roelas, one of the leading exponents of the Sevillian school of the time. Both would prepare the ground for the full introduction of tenebrism, when Ribera's works began to arrive en masse in Spain via Seville. Thus, it was the modern style that softened the still mannerist compositional schemes in his work. Francisco de Herrera is now represented in the most important art galleries throughout the world, including the Prado, the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Fine Arts Museum in Seville and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

      Mar. 09, 2022

SAN ANTONIO DE PADUA CON EL NIÑO

      Est: -
