    • Zoologico de la Habana. 1974.
      Jul. 18, 2023

      Zoologico de la Habana. 1974.

      Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: JORGE HERNANDEZ SIZE: 30 x 44 5/8 in./76.2 x 113.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Simply because diplomatic relations broke off between the United States and Castroist Cuba in 1961 doesn’t mean that the Cuban tourist machine came to a complete grinding halt. To that end, the National Tourism Industry Institute (or INIT, the acronym under which it is known in Cuba) uses one of the big cats from the Havana zoo to lure Hispanic travelers to the capital city. Hernandez places the seemingly uncaged candy-striped tiger directly before the public in a non-confrontational graphic encounter. This is a silkscreen poster. (Contemporary; Animals; Cats)

      Che de América. ca. 1970.

      Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: JORGE HERNANDEZ SIZE: 16 3/4 x 25 3/4 in./42.7 x 65.3 cm PRINTER: Empresa Impresora Especies Postales DESCRIPTION: Hernandez was clearly inspired by the famous Alberto Korda photograph that has been called "a symbol of the twentieth century" and "the world’s most famous photo." The portrait of Che Guevara (1928-1967) known as "Guerrillero Heroico," or "Heroic Guerrilla," was captured on March 5, 1960, at a memorial service for victims of the La Coubre explosion in Havana, Cuba. Guevara was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, politician, author, physician, military theorist, and guerrilla leader. After his death, his portrait became a ubiquitous countercultural symbol worldwide—he was perceived by many to be a martyr, and leftist followers adopted his ideology and desire to create a consciousness driven by moral rather than material incentives. In Hernandez's treatment, the iconic portrait is rendered almost as a silhouette—the image so recognizable that details are no longer necessary—and bright stars consume the scene. It's a powerful image rife with energy, and a testament to the lasting impact of Korda's portrait. (Contemporary; Propaganda)

      Che de América.

      Est: $700 - $900

Drawing his inspiration from the famous Alberto Korda photograph that has been called a symbol of the Twentieth Century and the world's most famous photo, Hernandez brings the iconic image of Che Guevara (1928-1967) into the public eye once more, layering-on a field of revolutionary stars and torrid color. Based on the cropped version of Guerrillero Heroico (Heroic Guerrilla)-taken on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba, at a memorial service for victims of the La Coubre explosion-the poster sizzles with intensity, reducing Che's image almost to a shadow-image silhouette, yet one that refuses to fade away, continuing to inspire and endure, most especially in Latin American countries. Guevara was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, politician, author, physician, military theorist and guerrilla leader. After death, his image became a ubiquitous countercultural symbol worldwide. He remains a controversial and significant historical

    • JORGE HERNANDEZVaradero.
      Nov. 11, 2007

      JORGE HERNANDEZVaradero.

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

JORGE HERNANDEZ Varadero. Seeing as the resort town of Varadero is also called Playa Azul meaning "blue beach" in Spanish it's most apropos that it's impossible to tell where the sky begins and the land and sea end in this staggeringly layered Hernandez creation. Situated on the Hicacos Peninsula, some eighty-seven miles east of Havana, at the eastern end of the Via Blanca highway, Varadero is one of the largest resorts in the Caribbean, boasting more than twelve miles of white sand beaches. Hotels began to appear in the 1950s, and after the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the beach's many mansions were expropriated from their rich owners. Today, Varadero is primarily visited by European and Canadian tourists, and the number of American tourists visiting Varadero is on the rise despite the restrictions that prevent its citizens from flying directly from the U.S. to Cuba. Unlike many other Cuban tourism centers, Cubans can visit Varadero, though their use of some hotels is restricted. Impreso por Divulgacion INIT

    • JORGE HERNANDEZJibacoa.
      Nov. 11, 2007

      JORGE HERNANDEZJibacoa.

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

JORGE HERNANDEZ Jibacoa. Far less aggressively sunny than the previous poster though certainly centrally radiant this Hernandez 'Sol' poster calls our attention to Jibacoa, a fishing village in the Havana Province located in the municipality of Santa Cruz del Norte at the mouth of the Rio Jibacoa. Perhaps Hernandez's greatest graphic quality is his ability to make static images appear as if they were in motion swirling, active elements capable of surging past the boundaries of the poster. Here, it's the waves that get most of the play, which appear to be a bit too turbulent for a casual day of sailing. In the 1990s, an all-inclusive resort was built east of the village one of the first openings of Cuban economy to foreign investments. Impreso por Divulgacion INIT

    • JORGE HERNANDEZCuba/alegre como su sol.
      Nov. 11, 2007

      JORGE HERNANDEZCuba/alegre como su sol.

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

JORGE HERNANDEZ Cuba/alegre como su sol. The catchphrase in this poster which is used in all three of the Hernandez designs offered in this auction can translate several ways: 'As bright,' 'As lively' or 'As cheerful' 'as its sun.' Seeing as the artist was referring to Cuba in the service of INIT the National Tourism Industry Institute chances are that all three were intended to come into play for the potential Spanish-speaking traveler. But all verbiage pales when played off of Hernandez's richly-hued star, a veritable celestial sea anemone-inspired creation that gives off the distinct impression of being completely animated and very much in motion.
