Alfredo Helsby Artist Sheep Landscape Oil Painting

Early 20th Century; Original, frame 26.75” x 23”, canvas 21” x 17”, Important estate found, untouched example by British/Chilean artist. Oil on canvas is depicting sunset hillside with grazing sheep with a beautiful illuminated sky. Artist signed lower right. Displayed in original frame behind glass, heavily carved gold gilt reeded column, untouched and in original estate found condition. Frame has damage to bottom corners. Alfredo Helsby was born into a family of photographers in 1862, in Chile. Alfredo studied painting under the British painter Thomas Somerscales at Colegio Mackay de Valparaiso. He later studied under Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma, In 1906, Alfredo spent a year traveling through Europe before he settled in Paris, where he studied under Jena-Paul Laurens. Along with Valenzuela Puelma, Alfredo exhibited his works in Paris, and London. In 1908, he returned to Chile. Alfredo Helsby died in 1933. Please view photos. Oil on cardboard Alfredo Helsby (1862-1933) - One of the most important Chilean landscape painters of the 19th century Signed ‘Alfredo Helsby’ in pencil to the lower margin Dimensions: 27 x 35 cm Later profile wooden frame: 41.5 x 50 cm Alfredo Helsby admired the paintings of Whistler and Turner, whose light treatment inspired him in his impressionistic mountain, field and village landscapes Condition: The painting is in very good, color fresh condition, showing minor craquelure. The inspection under UV light reveals small scattered strokes of retouching, especially to the sky. The cardboard is slightly warped. The frame is minimally chipped. Alfredo Helsby (1862-1933) The Chilean painter Alfredo Helsby was born into a family of photographers and studied painting under the British painter Thomas Somerscales at Colegio Mackay de Valparaíso and later under Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma. Alfredo Helsby (Chilean, 1862-1933) A Muddy Road (near Santiago) Signed "Alfredo Helsby" l.l., titled in pencil on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 28 3/4 x 36 1/4 in. (73.0 x 92.0 cm), in a 1926 Carrig-Rohane frame. Condition: Craquelure, surface grime. N.B. In 1903 Boston painters Charles Prendergast and Hermann Dudley Murphy, along with the carver and gilder Walfred Thulin, joined together to start a framing business. Begining in 1906, the business was known as the Frame Shop of Hermann Dudley Murphy. It was incorporated in 1911 as the Thulin-Murphy Company. In 1914, the name was changed to the Carrig-Rohane Shop, after the Irish village of Murphy's father. In 1915, Murphy turned management of the business over to Robert C. Vose. At its peak, the shop employed fifteen people and provided custom frames to museums, galleries, and collectors throughout America. In 1939 the corporation was dissolved, and the operation moved to the Vose Galleries' premises. These notes are based upon information from the Smithsonian Institution's catalogue entry for the microfilm records of Carrig-Rohane Shop.
